Is this asking too much?

Everyone has different viewpoints

I know for a long time we cleaned the balls in our pool room every Sunday. In a ball polishing machine. Some sets get used more than others so every set of balls gets dirty at a different rate. I have had complaints that balls are too clean and complaints that balls are too dirty. I have a lot of one pocket players that HATE it when I clean the one pocket balls. I always tell them if they want them cleaned to tell me. They are always welcome to do it themselves. I now clean the sets in spurts so that some are clean and some are dirty. This way people can pick out the level of dirtyness that they like best. I dont get it...but thats what people want most the time. I got tired of arguing with people that preferred dirty balls.

Well this is how I look at it.

If I was from out of town and just wanted to play or practice for a hour or so and came in and was paying whatever the rate was. And someone handed me balls that hadn't been cleaned in a week or more. I would give them a WTF look.

I just look at it as I am providing your place with business and I am asking for a simple request that honestly isnt too hard to give. I've been to several places that have the ball cleaning machine right at the front counter and they clean the balls before they are handed out.

Also how would you like to goto a place like Amsterdam Billiards and pay thier rates and be handed a set of balls that havent been cleaned in 2 weeks? just as a example. Or maybe Jude could give us some insite as to what his place does for cleaning balls and when they get a set back after someone has been playing for a hour or two.

stupid question but why would someone playing 1hole want dirty balls? I've always heard guys who play 1hole want the best tables and balls so when they slow roll a ball it doesnt roll off or get a bad roll????

Dirty balls throw better...

dirty balls might throw better, but trying to make thin cuts is a nightmare. You can see the balls twist, and playing 14.1, the balls just will NOT break up. I can't think of any situation when I want to play on dirty equipment.......EVER!:D

People just don't care if it isn’t theirs. The pool room that I play in hasn’t had the balls or the tables cleaned in at least a year. People complain about it all the time but the guy said if you don’t like it go somewhere else and play. We just don’t have anywhere else to play here. Well I had posted a thing about this pool room a while back and it is sad that people just don’t care enough about things like this. It looks like to me the owners would have since enough to know cloth and balls last longer if they keep them clean. (What a bunch of Idiots)

Storm,

I know a few of those places down there do take care of the equipment, (although Jamie's place is now being closed) I cannot imagine what would happen up here if they decided to not clean the balls after every use, people would go crazy, heck in the tournament I run I get a brand new set of balls and CLEAN table for the finals to be played on.

After every use, the balls are cleaned in the ball cleaning machine before they can go out again, not to mention they hand polish the billiard balls after every use, so in fact when it comes to equipment, we are babied compared to most who only clean tables/balls once a day or once a week/month.

I have worked in my family's billiard parlor since I was 8 years old. I have yet to understand the mentality of a pool player. I cannot answer your question because I do not know. I have had people scream at me for giving them free pool, and people scream at me for paying full price. I have had people scream at me for clean balls, and people scream for dirty balls. Just like the old saying.

"You can please none of the people none of the time"

This is a good opportunity to tell a story that is true and has always made me laugh. This happened in my favorite poolroom, but represents more than just a poolroom, maybe even society or even the world.

The room was slowly over the years going down hill. It was becoming more a beer joint than a poolroom, but I still hung there and even worked the bar on occasion. I did my best to keep things clean but the owner didn't care much. Truth is, most of the customers were beer drinkers. They spent a lot of money, and the owner was afraid of running them off with too many rules. Had he put his foot down from the start it might have been different, but he let them do what they wanted - spitting on the floor, putting cigarets out on the floor, putting beer bottles on the rail while they played.

One day I was on my way to the bathroom to take a leak. Leading to the scummy bathroom was a small hallway with a scummy carpet that connected it to the poolroom. I heard an odd sound in the hallway, and as I got closer I realized it was one of the new regulars taking a leak in the hallway right outside the bathroom door.

The guy's name was Oscar. I don't like being a cop, so I didn't say anything except to look at him and exlclaim with a shocked look on my face, "Oscar!", to which Oscar immediately replied in a heavy Mexican accent, "Tommy, da bathroooom, eees too steeeenky!" .... And that's when I realized how it happens, how things go down. And how to keep them from going down. Just clean the bathroom and the hallway will clean itself.

Tommy Joe,

That basically reminds me of the old pool hall in town I usta frequent all the time.

It Had the old style pool hall look, and was always busy, but things slowly went south back in feb or march of 2005. And it kinda started when the owner Fired a girl he had working partime for him so he could get a day or two off every week. Well she had come about 10 mins late on a sunday, and he just told her to get the hell out. Which was stupid because she always worked for him on short notice if he needed a day off for anything.

Well after i heard about that since the girl and I was still friends at the time, me and her began going to another pool hall across town. As did several other people. And the of course everything began to just go down hill.

The tables were not cleaned, the balls we're always dirty, the bathroom was nasty as hell, I even complained about how the pisser was yellow stained, and smelled worse than a outhouse.

Now the owner of this pool hall, is so far behind on the rent he doesnt even own the tables anymore. And even on a so called busy day he might only get 20 or 30 people in the whole day.

anyways, I wish i could spend several days a week at the pool hall and show people what its like to get good service and be able to play with and on clean equipment.

This reminds me of one time when i was at my cousins house and this guy always has a nyce set of clean balls, so i asked him what he uses to clean his balls, his reply soap and water.............

At Amsterdam, the balls are cleaned every night. Since the sets aren't associated with the table (no table #'s on the trays), the manager has the luxury of giving out any tray of balls for any table at any time. If it's a bunch of kids, they're ususally given a set that's already been used that day. If it's obviously a player (one who has their own cue), they're given a clean set, if possible.

There were always times where this wasn't possible. Sometimes, the night before was a little crazy (someone called in sick or something) or the room is really busy early in the day. There are always times when giving out a clean set is simply not automatic. The thing to do is politely ask and be as understanding as possible, even if you don't really feel that way.

If it is the case that the girl is too busy to wash balls, then maybe they could move the machine out front and let customers wash the balls as they desire.

If it is the case that it costs them money to wash the balls and they are trying to save money, then maybe they could charge a dollar or whatever for cleaning the balls.

However, some businesses do not have a clue and refuse to listen to their customers. They don't stay in business long. The owner should not be ragging on you for wanting clean balls, she should be listening to you and working on a way to make you happy so you will return and spend your money there.

Once upon a time there was a small store which listened to their customers and gave their customers what they wanted. Soon the business grew and opened another store. Then another and another. The store's name is Walmart!
