What I've heard that the more growth rings, the more dense the shaft. And that should provide more solid hit. Usually there are about 6-10 growth rings on a half circle around the shaft, though I've seen as many as 17 or as low as 4. Usually normal shafts (not special old growth shafts) have less than 15 growth rings.

But I wouldn't choose a shaft just by looking at growth rings. There should be other things to consider as well.

Show the face of the collar end.
Show the whole shaft too.
You can have million rings per inch but they are off/crooked, the shaft would still warp.

My understanding, is that it's personal preference. I prefer the tighter shafts on My personal, and know people that want everything stiff, from the ferrule, shaft joint, tip and whatever else, but then again that's too much for some. A shaft can be too stiff/dense for some people, therefore less rings is not always a bad thing IMO. There may be a weight issue for some also. The best way I know to tell, is to hit with it if possible, and see how it feels to you. Seems like a 9 foot table tells the story better then anything for me, because I can use almost any shaft on bar boxes, but 9's tend to give me a better idea of how well I read the deflection, unless I'm just instroke and can do no wrong, when that happens I can be fooled into thinking the shaft feels better suited to me then It really is. I've put tight shafts in some peoples hands, and they could not understand how I played so well with them, because they were used to the opposite, and could'nt stand the feel of mine. There are stroke issues involved with this as well IMO, so I believe it just depends on the person. I'm Sure there are other thoughts about this, so not the general rule here, just My opinion, from personal experience.
