Someone had mentioned that on here. Can anyone confirm? This is very sad news....he is one of my favorite players.

Either way if he does retire, I think Ko Pin Yi will eventually become Taiwan's most feared player.

Yes he is. If you read Chinese I can show you the news articles. He did something like this a couple years back but I think this time its for real. He says his pool winnings isn't secure and wants to find an alternative. Also he never graduated high school, and it is required that you have a high school diploma in Taiwan to be a registered pool coach/instructor.

I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't want to deal with the stress of having to support himself with tournament winnings and gambling. Life as a pool player is good for some, but he doesn't seem to embrace the pressure. Just some of my observations from watching him for over 10 years, starting at age 12 LOL

He hasn't participated in any tournaments since the WPC I think. Yea, Ko Pin Yi is 21 now and still growing as a player. I hope to see him to try to come to America to make a bigger name for himself, although he is already successful in the Asian tournaments. Unlike Yang, his dad brought him to become a professional pool player which I think will result in a better and longer lasting career, even though he didn't have the crazy early career successes that Yang had in his teens.

Pretty sorry commentary on the state of pool when one of the absolute best players in the world feels like he has to give the game up because there's no secure future in it. Constantly having to deal with the pressure and seeing no financial security in the game are the reasons that Sigel and Balukas quit pool still at the top of their games as well.

articles?

I agree completely. About 3 or 4 years ago, another Taiwanese had quit pool, his name is Hsia-Hui-Kai if you remember. He was just as dominant as Yang in the Asian tournaments. He ended up being a basic financial analyst, pretty much close to an entry-level job. He was one of the top Asian players and it sure is sad to see people give up their career while on the top of their game.

He once told my friend that while he was probably one of the top pool players in Asia, he had difficulties and a lot of financial pressure to just purchase a car.

Best case scenario for most pool player is to have a professional pool career, do part time lessons and manage a pool hall. However professional pool is such a time consuming career and has little rewards.

Do you know if Hsia still plays pool in free time or he completely quit pool? Also, he must be pretty smart to get the financial analyst job at his age given the fact that most banks or companies almost always choose fresh out graduated students.

On the side notes, from what I heard Yang wasn't quit playing pool. He just had some difficulties to find a new sponsor. His achievements in last few years and the crisis are the main results that some of his sponsors left him. He said that he would take kind of a rest, and would play again soon. It was back in October. Not sure how things have been turned out for him. Does anyone know?

A friend of mine who is from Taiwan just recently told me that Yang is retiring because of some health issue. My friend doesn't know what the health problem is. I am very curious if anyone has any information regarding this.
