is your backhand always the same?

heres my dilemma.....im always trying to tweak my game, especially when i hit a rough spot and im trying to figure out what the problem is. Ive noticed different results with different backhand grips. Let me say my backhand grip is somewhat compromised because i mangled my index finger as a kid and it doenst bend, so it comes down beside the cue but cant wrap around it completely.
But here is what ive noticed, if I snug the cue into my hand, up into the webbing of my thumb and index finger and then my fingers are really loose around the bottom......i can play superlong straight in shots, especially off the rail, no problem at all, but of course i cant get much action on the ball, i can shoot it hard or slow roll it though and its dead in.
But on other shots, if i leave a little space between the top of my hand and the cue (like ive often seen it recommended in books) and lightly grip the cue mostly with the sides of my thumb and index finger and lightly wrap my third finger around the cue to cradle it, i can get super action on the cue and my accuracy doent seem to suffer at all, unless its a rail shot. I think my stroke is pretty good and straight.....i can hit a ball down table and it will come right back to the center of my cue.
So i was just wondering if people ever change up their back hand....for consistency's sake i feel like i should only shoot one way when it comes to mechanics such as this, but from a result stand point its hard not to use something I know is going to work.

I endeavor to have it stay the same on all shots, but I'm sure I only partially succeed at that. IMO, the fewer factors changing from shot to shot the more consistent shooting will be.

Watch the pros the position of their back hand changes up or down the wrap depending on the shot...Form should remain the same but your hand should move...Long shot, draw shot, ect ect Just my 2 cents..

If you are way at the end of the stick a draw shot will be more difficult...Physics right???

some shots are easier with the hand farther back on the cue, some shots are easier with the hand farther forward on the cue.

grip pressure can be used to help control speed.

so basically the answer is no, your back hand is not the exact same for all shots. you don't change anything drastic, but its not the exact same.

Grip position should changed based on bridge length. Long bridge = grip closer to the buttcap. Short bridge = grip closer to the joint.

Am I mistaken or was the original question about changing the grip itself, not the position of the backhand on the butt?

You may or may not be mistaken - depends on how you interpret "So i was just wondering if people ever change up their back hand?" which was the question asked by scottcoyote. In any case, I was replying to The Kiss, hence the quote in my post.

I think the pressure applied by the backhand fingers should remain the same through the whole stroke. So, you shouldn't let it loose or tighten the grip in the end of the followthrough. What I've noticed is that for some shots a tight grip is better and for some shots a very loose grip is needed.

no i wasnt referring to positioning the hand up and down the butt......i was referring to the actual grip and how the cue fits in your hand.....on every shot

lol......ok thanks richard......i will search them out.

im lined up to do the cuetec school in october......im hoping to get some expert supervision on this to help me sort it out. Its possible because of my bad finger ill have to go with something less than orthodox, but its hard for me to shoot and try to figure it out all at the same time.
