Boy, has live-streaming (pool-edition) come a long way. Concomitant with video improvements, there has been an uptick in the quality of commentary.

Dr. Billy was an early articulator of the action, personalities, history, and prophetic shot-by-shot evaluations. Like him or loathe him (place me squarely in the Yes column), Danny D. provided color, insight, humor, and perspective.

Fast forward.

At the most recent Derby, I had the privilege of watching the action — headphones attached — on the TV table. More knowledgeable fans might not have needed the auditory enhancements, but I certainly benefited from the discernment and analyses provided by Mark Wilson and JJ.

One of my girlfriend’s father attended some of the tourney, and I asked him what made the two interlocutors so … so good. So perceptive. So engaging.

“They listen to each other.”

Whoa! Could it be that simple?

Once I placed the headphones back on … well, yes. They did listen to each other. Didn’t talk over each other. Didn’t repeat what had just be uttered. They listened.

Huh.

Is there a life-lesson lurking about? I’m pretty yappy, so maybe … nah, probably not. What I have to impart is so profound that letting someone else interrupt the flow … eh, no thank you.

Definitely one of the important traits for good commentary.
