It would be so easy and classy

It would be so easy to open the field up to 256 or 512 players. Who, I ask, would that hurt? The hotels? The tournament proper? The local economy? Seems to me that a really open event would solidify this present farce, yes I say farce of an event into a true world championship.
Who, in their right mind, can justify going to New York, for $2,000 or more in expense money and only one person qualifies. And against very tough players.
I sent Matchroom an outline for a simple way to expand the field and be the classiest, best tournament in the world. Of course, they never really considered changing anything.
There are lots of decent people, good players like me who can't afford the UPA's events and don't like the way it does things anyway.Well, enough pontificating.
I've decided that at my future tournaments, players must sign an agreement not to play in One Pocket, Bank Pool or Grady's All Offense in any event put on or sanctioned by the UPA, the WPA or the BCA.I've decided to start the U.S. Open Bank Pool, with One pocket and a Bank Pool Ring Game. And yes, I sent proposals to the WPA and the BCA. They didn't even answer.
Also, I'll have a booth funded and manned by businessmen who, like me, think the Hall Of Fame that currently exists, is a complete travesty.
I'm going to be doing some exciting things, including Poker with Pool and it'll suit me just fine to not be affiliated with any group.
If things go really well this year, I promise to have 14.1 in 05'. You can expect my ads. Grady

Way to go, Grady!

I agree with your thoughts exactly. If I can be of any help I would gladly. Also, my offer to broadcast any of your matches is an open-ended offer.

Bit confused

Grady: you say that you don't want to put up $2K to go to the qualifying, and you can't afford to go to all the UPA events.

However you COULD afford to go to the WPC in Taiwan and (assuming that they open up the tournament to 512 players) stay there for 3 - 4 weeks????? WTF?

Most of my adult life, when I travel I get work to help me defray expenses. Like the time in 94' when I went to Germany and Spain. It cost me $5,000, with everything, to go, before I got to hit the first ball.I did pretty well in the first event. I had a couple of thousand dollars coming in prize money and I was still in the tournament with a chance to win more money.
I went to the tournament director and asked if I could draw some of my prize money so I could purchase gifts for my kids and benefit the local economy, etc. He said, " That's not the way we do things over here, Mr. Mathews." "Oh," I said, "How do you do things over here?" "We send you a check in about six weeks," he responded.
To make a long story short, it took me two years to get my money, and that only after threatening lawsuit. I didn't even receive an apology. Some of the German players have never gotten their money!!!!
Anyway, you ask how I can afford to go to Taiwan for a few weeks. It would be easy for me and I'd have a great time. Of course it would be even easier if I could take the Charlie Williams route, which simply getting himself invited to everything under the sun, over more qualified players. Most of the time when Mr. Williams talks to a promoter he asks for perks in abundance, starting with himself.

Of course, the UPA corporate credit card can be of great assistance to cover those traveling expenses, funded by the 100 bucks from players like Kid Delicious.

Hi Grady,

first of all something personal: Thanks for the "only Kicks" Tape. To me this is tremendous value hope there is more to come!!

It always puzzles me why in hell its not possible to get a real solid Pro Men's Tour working in the top country of Pool Billiard? I've been following this since I started playing 16 years ago. All the different initiatives went somehow wrong. I know this has been discussed endless times but why can't the players and business side not agree to a model which suits both? I kindly ask you, as an insider, what's the big problem??? In my humble opinion it must be possible to engage professional managers to do the job once the players can agree to this. Even Barry Hearn can be of great help (you know what he has done for snooker in the 80's) if the players are united.

Just to serve my curiosity: Which tournamnet you are referring to in 94?? That's probably why you never showed up here again ;-)
