A high percentage of this game is about ego. Thats where the hustle comes into play. The difference between the top level pool shooter and the poolshark is that the poolshark doesn't put the time in to play on the top level in competition, but, does know how to swindle his opponent.
Not too long ago I played a guy who many believe is the best pool shooter on Staten Island. He was going to give me the 6 and out in 9 ball. I laughed at him and told him he had to be joking and we had to play for something to make it worth my while. We wound up playing only for the time.
The important thing to note here is that while he gave me this ridiculous spot.
I in turn was going to purposely make this match close or even lose to raise the stakes for a future match for money.
I deceided to let him break first( A big mistake). He ran out 3 racks in a row on me. In the 4th rack He couldn't run out, but played a good safe on me and I was left with no shot.
He is now up 4-0. In the 5th rack I finally had a shot and I ran a few balls and missed an easy shot. H e is up 5-0. I do the exact same thing in the sixth game and He is on the hill with a 6-0 lead.
In the seventh game I finally get to shoot and call one of my spot balls to win. It's now 6-1. All of a sudden I'm starting to shoot my game and I'm making some tremendous shots and I wind up winning 7-6. I absolutely psyched him out in that match it was worth any amouny of money I could have sharked him out of. The better I shot the more intimated he became.
My plan of throwing the match deliberately went out the window, because there were a lot of people watching and just beating him the way I did was worth its weight in gold!
