I would like to hear questions and comments about Ivor-X Ferrules. Please be honest and descriptive of any problems.
I now have an ample supply and will sell at wholesale prices. You must buy at least 20. Larger quantities are available at zylrcue@hotmail.com.

Can you give me an idea of how much and some more information on these Ferrules? A PM would be fine.

Hi Kerry,

Welcome to the board. Having owned one of your cues, I think you do very nice work.

I hope you don't mind some constructive critism on Ivor-X ferrules. I'm a player, and not a cuemaker so take it for what it is worth....

I had Ivor-X put on two new shafts for a cue that I have, unfortunately within a week of getting the cue both tips literally "popped" off and took small pieces of the ferrule with it. The shafts were supposedly made by a "quality" cuemaker, but I have doubts about whether the shafts where properly "cured". At any rate my initial impression was that the ferrules were "brittle" and could easily chip. Again, perhaps this has to do with how well the shafts were "prepared"?

In all honesty I have not played too long with with these shafts because I was disgusted with the shaft/product that this other cuemaker turned out, so I won't comment on the "playability" of the ferrule compared to other material. I will say that I was initially bothered by the way that the ferrule felt in my fingers when I shot with it. The surface seemed to "stick", for lack of better words, when my fingers came into contact with it. Other ferrule materials that I've tried seem to "glide" better through the fingers. Again, perhaps this is an issue dealing with how the shaft was prepared by the original builder?

At any rate, I don't mean to be a "downer", I certainly admire your work and perhaps this description is not reliable due to the work of another cuemaker.

My two cents,

Regards,

Doug

Kerry,

Welcome to the forum!!!

There is another section on the forum called "Ask The Cuemaker" - you might get more feedback there.

Your participation on the board will be interesting as you're a guy who tell it like it is :D

Once in a while, I come accross a player that pulls the cue so far back on the backstroke that the ferrule touches their hand. The reason it felt sticky is because it is glossy. Have you ever picked up a cheap import cue with so much lacquer on the shaft that it stuck to your hand when you tried to stroke it? You will get the same effect if you slide the butt of your cue over an open bridge. Unfortunately, the high gloss is also what keeps the chaulk out of it better that any other ferrule including Ivory. So there is a trade-off. My best suggestion would be to not pull back so far as to pull the ferrule into your bridge hand. Or, silmply take the gloss off the ferrule with a piece of 800 paper. As far as chipping goes, all I can say is that they must have been installed improperly as was indicated by the tips popping of so easily. I would be happy to replace the ferrules for you and install the tip so they won't come off. I think I've had 2 tips pop pff in the last 10 years and both times I think it was bad or outdated glue. Are you in So Calif.? Please feel free to call me in the evenings at 714-750-2837.
It's never to late. I hope I can help you out. Z.

I've installed about a dozen Ivor-X ferrules both on new shafts that I've built as well as replacements on other shafts. I've never had any problems installing the ferrules and everyone that plays with the ferrules that I installed seems to like them. Personally, I like the ferrulle, but I'm still experimenting with different taper, tip and ferrule combo's. I would be interested in buying more. Please PM me a price.

Doug, did you happen to see if the cap in the ferrules were removed?
Like it was drilled-thru and the wood tenon topped at the face of the ferrule?

Joey,

No the cap on the ferrules is still in place...if I understand your question. No wood tennon is showing.

Kerry,

Thanks you for the offer. I will call you later.

Regards,

Doug
