Ivory importation has been illegal in this country for decades as has poaching in the countries where elephants live. Crank down on the penalty in both places, that makes sense, but destroying the ivory of dead elephants or even worse mastodons is idiotic. All it does is increase the black market value of ivory and increase the reward for the poachers. In the US we have customs people watching closely for the importation now and I doubt there is much getting by unless the agents are crooked and need to be jailed. There is not much we can do about the Asians and their importation (where the poached ivory is going) besides continuing making the importation or ivory products illegal. I haven't bought a cue in almost 20 years and have cues as much as 70 years old with ivory. What am I supposed to do have the ivory removed or the cues destroyed. I don't think so.
