If you have a cue with an Ivory joint and ivory collar for your shaft, would you use this cue for breaking? Or can you only use this for regular shots? If you do crack the ivory joint and ivory collar on the shaft, is it easily replaceable? I guess my last question is directed to the cue makers on the board. Thanks in advance.

Ivory

Generally, ivory is a brittle material that you wouldn't want to break with, because it could crack. However, to answer your second question, it is replaceable if you want to keep paying to replace it. I know someone who breaks and plays with a cue with an ivory ferrule....every few weeks, he cracks it and has to replace the ivory ferrule and tip....

I'm not sure it is worth the hassle of doing that with a ferrule, let alone with a joint and shaft collar....

There are less expensive materials that work better for breaking....

Ivory ferrule; $55, extra for a layered tip.
Ivory shaft collar; $75
Ivory joint collar; $150

That's what I charge for replacement...

I have two shafts by Gus Szamboti that are well over 20 years old, they have been PLAYED. Broken with, massed with, tapped the side of balls with and there is not a single crack in any of them.

Ivory joints are very durable. Most times the ivory is "padded" between phenolic collars both on the butt and on the shaft side. People talk like they are breaking with the ivory, it's just not the case. Most cracked ivory comes from a few things.. the piece may have had the crack in it prior to installation and it just went from there, someone left the cue in an extreme climate, or improper installation to begin with. The brittleness of ivory is way over stated.
