What is a good sub for ivory dots. I need something in 1/8, 3/16, 1/4 and maybe 1/2 dia.
Any info and possible sources? Please feel free to Pm on source info if you like.

Ivory substitute

There's a guy on eBay that sells something he calls "Faux Ivory". Don't know how it compares to the real thing.

Alternative Ivory

I use Alternative Ivory.
Machines well, glues well with CA.
Has translucent grains like Ivory, white when first cut, turns slightly(very slightly) creamy, I'm not sure if it's the finish or ultavoilot light.
Cross section looks like marbling, that's the sure way of knowing it's not real.
http://www.woodturnerscatalog.com search alternative ivory
or check the pen blanks section. I seem to get "different" :( service with them since Nils left. PM me if you want to know how to get your order shipped
correctly...I'm serious..
Forgot to tell you, if you want the ivory grain pattern to show, you have to cut your inlays from the radial face. The axial face is the cross section and will have a like cream marbling look.

I have tried the Alternative Ivory and the Faux Ivory, and prefer the machining and gluing qualities of the Faux Ivory. I also tried subjecting the Faux Ivory to cold and hot temperatures and it shrank and swelled almost identically to the Hard Maple in the test. The Alternative Ivory seems to be a little harder, but when subjected to extreme shock the Alternative Ivory will fracture and the Faux Ivory dents.
