Ivory substitute?

You did this as a cue maker or a player ?

I have put on a few ferrules too.. but I have never gone nuts doing that to my own playing cue and I have 4 shafts for my main player.
I have replaced one ferrule .

The true test would have to be on the same shaft and I haven't disliked my main shafts to the point I am willing to changing tips ferrules on a weekly basis.

I have a ivorine 3 on 2 shafts 2 melamine ferrules on

As a player, though I do my own tips with separate fiber bases by hand. You've seen my pictures.

I've amassed about 40 shafts over the years, so I have a fair basis for comparison. You're right, it's best to control the variables. I can come pretty close with one of my more recent cues, pictured below. The top ferrule is Juma; the bottom is ivory. Color is pretty close, and the hit is not that far from each other, even though Juma is a softer material. You can see the rough texture triangle tips with the same pads. I forgot to mention Micarta above also, as I have an early shaft with that. I would agree that Micarta, Aegis, and Melamine are a bit crisper hitting. However, there is more variation in the tip hardness than in the ferrule material in the sound of the hit, in my opinion.

By the way, the pictures also show how Juma looks as joint rings, buttsleeve decorative rings, and the buttplate itself. I don't know if I'd recommend it as a joint material, as I haven't tried that. It stands up well as a ferrule material; I have a fair amount of play on two Juma ferrules, one with the steel joint you see, and another with an ivory joint. Hope this helps.

All the best,
WW

Inlays made from the bones of liberals.... seems like a good start.

Besides my cue is very liberal, keeps giving my money to other people... :)
