Jacoby - a step up?

Again - thank you all for your time. Just to fill in a bit - I do shoot with the OB 2+ normally, and some with my Katana. One other thing I wanted to say was that I was favorably surprised with my Joss stock shaft - better than I expected.

Any cue maker from Wisconsin both custom and manufacturers are excellent. I think it's the weather or the Wisconsin wood. Schon, Jacoby and pechauer are all from Wisconsin and all three make great cues. I prefer schon, but I've played with Jacoby cues that were better. Their LD shafts are great. Pechauer has the "uglier" cues overall but their cues play pretty great and they get better with age, but that's true of all cues. Schmelke I think are from Wisconsin and they make the best cheap cue out there. And I'm not sure of how many custom cue makers there are in Wisconsin but I'd buy anyone of them without having played with them before

hi

Owned several Schons and 2 Jacoby and Jacoby with HybridEdge shaft wins!

Out of 3 Schons I had only one played well for me. The hit was very close to each other, however, that feeling that tells you if you aimed good or not was not present from all 3.

Jacoby with HE shaft plays way better in my opinion.

For production cues nothing beats Mezz.

No. A Jacoby is not a "step up" from a Schon or Joss.

Elaborate? Curious why it isn't from your point of view.

I've played with all 3 in a similar price range and the Jacoby is a superior player in my opinion compared to Joss and Schon. The edge hybrid shaft sets the 3 manufactures apart.

I have a friend that had a custom Jacoby made for around 1k which included a 314 to go with the edge hybrid. I didn't like the way he designed the cue but it plays very nice. Being able to choose the material in the forearm is also an advantage to me making that decision

If I put them in order:
Jacoby, Schon, Joss.

I agree 100%. It's all subjective obviously but like you once I started playing with Mezz I decided to stick with them and you can buy a sneaky pete version relatively cheap if price point is a major factor.

Have you tried Joss LD shafts? They have 2 types. Play very nice.

No, I've only played with the standard shaft. Wasn't even aware they were making one? How is it constructed?

Indeed.

But even then not all cores are equal. Most are just a straight glued in dowel.

This is what's inside a modern Joss:

.

Pretty cool... I've seen a few manufacturers, and even independent builders, that either thread their cores as such and even thread the different butt sections together...

Although, I know it's done for stability and allows the use of figured and burl woods that normally may not survive the rigors of cue use; but does the cue then take on the characteristics of the core wood, in terms of playability, sound? How much does the outer wood factor?

They have two types. Regular pie cuts LD and my preference. The natural where they core out like the first six inches. It's on their website.

Jacoby would be a step down when comparing them to old Schon, even Evan Clark Schon, but with all the weirdness at Schon & Jacoby these days, I would just buy an older non-CX model Schon and call it good.
I even have some nice older Schon shafts if you need one.
But like you said, it's all subjective.

I'd like to try both out. Appreciate the info.

They also have screw in butt extensions now. Just need to make jump cues now.
