Well, heck, at least it made international news, which helps advance pocket billiards on a global scale. Yay!

A Japanese pool player gave one of the most bizarre post-match interviews in sporting history after reaching the quarter-finals of the World Pool Masters.

Naoyuki Oi was quizzed after his win at the event in Gibraltar and answered presenter Tony Wrighton’s questions in his own unique style.

It became clear fairly quickly that his level of English was not necessarily the best, but he carried on like a true champion and tackled the interview in very entertaining fashion.

At one point he begins talking about having a pear and an apple, and we’re not really sure exactly what's going on, but it makes for rather enjoyable viewing nonetheless. :)

Lol, that was hilarious. I am sure that he was just trying to be funny.

To give context of the bit towards the end, he is invoking the pen pineapple apple pen fad that has been the hottest thing in Japan in the past year. In short, the easy way to digest it as an English speaker is that although the Japanese develop a decent toolbox of English words to work with in their daily speech, speaking actual English that makes sense remains a huge barrier. Oi shows no hesitation in displaying how little command of the language he actually has, something he has a good laugh about on the Japanese side of billiards conversation.

Im not 100% certain but fairly that this guy has given crazy funny weird/wild/off the wall interviews before. I think I was watching an old World Cup match or whatever the doubles competition and him and his partner gave a similarly crazy interview that at the time made me laugh and think is this guy serious or is he messing with everyone or what but I think it was explained his personality is like this so seeing this now doesn't shock me at all. By the way I thought it was great.

Ps. For the longest time when if pull as billiards up on my iPhone I was always logged In but for whatever reason lately I'm not logged in and have to sign in to comment or view the action thread etc and I'm literally usually too lazy to put the 20 seconds in to log in, but after seeing this and connecting it to the other video I saw I felt compelled to log in and shed some light on this because I want people to realize this guys awesome and not trying/forcing anything but literally might be like this all the time lol. Anyways thanks for posting this

He's a hoot. Love this guy. Here's another interview he did a couple years ago. Pool could use more players just like him: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ar04axrdJpw

Sorry I didn't read any of the comments but what I was referring to was the World Cup and thanks for posting the short clip but I actually saw another one I believe it was an actual match like over an hour and if I'm not mistaken was commentated by maybe jay helfert? but before it started they gave an introduction for each team and it was basically along these lines lol this guy is awesome.

Go on YouTube and punch in the pen- pineapple apple pen song. This is what he was doing without the dancing, thank God😀

You beat me to it, didn't see you posted the apple pen song. When I seen him do that, I knew most people would not understand what he's doing, which makes it even funnier imo😄

I think this is the kind of personality that pool needs right now. I like his style!
