Jason Miller Wins Bank 9

For those who missed it, 2-2 racing to 3, Kirkwood has a 4-1 lead, goes for a cross side bank that is off angle and needs to be stiffed with inside english or hit hard to shorten it up--misses it and Miller steps up and runs 4 banks and out to win the tournament 5-4. Awesome match, lots of tension despite some easy misses by both players.

Piggy and Diliberto provided commentary with Piggy calling the final shot by Kirkwood as the wrong shot and suggesting safer play to secure the win. Diliberto (who I thought made the right call at the time) maintained that Kirkwood needed to ignore the other balls and shoot the final shot all out to make.

Actually Piggy was warning against drawing the cue into the same pocket that the 1-ball was going towards, not suggesting that he play safe. Danny was saying just pot the ball and screw the rest.

Shooting the shot was the only play for sure. He could have definitely won it right there.

Banks Rule

Unbelievable match!!!

The drama was incredible. Miller jumped out to a 2-0 lead and was on the final ball in rack 3 before Kirkwood took the rest and forced another rack.

In the 4th rack Kirkwood got lucky by jawing the cue ball in the corner and not scratching, while Miller scratched in the same pocket on the next shot attempting a safety. Kirkwood came with a gutsy do-or-die shot, playing position on the last ball. He made it forcing a final game.

Both players had their chance to win in the final rack, with Kirkwood coming up a little short ($4000 miss). Miller, like the champion that he is, came through with a classy 4 ball run out for the win.

The commentary was excellent with Piggy and Diliberto. They were really enjoying the match and both made some excellent points. Piggy said it was one of the best matches he'd seen in his life. That is saying a lot.

The 2nd semifinal between Kirkwood and Jamie Farrel (with Diliberto and the Beard commentating) was excellent too, with Kirkwood getting on the hill (and even the final ball) before Farrel staked a great comeback to push it to hill-hill.

It's only the 4th day and I already got my money's worth!!!

I must have not written that clearly. I meant to say Piggy said the way he was shooting the shot was the wrong way (i.e. K should play position on the bank). Yes, clearly Kirkwood was suppose to shoot for the win in that situation. At the time I thought that Danny D was right and that he needed to fire away 100% on the make only, as that would increase accuracy.

I read safe not safer...my fault.

Great Final Match for the Bank Pool Title.
Look for a replay this week on BCn.

Jason Miller is really making a name for himself in banks. To win the banks again in a field of 470 players playing short rack race to 3 is incredible.

My tape of him rolling over Piggy in 10 minutes and then beating Brumback was one of my favorites until it got munched by a vcr. Looks like I'll be buying this years finals as well as a replacement tape of the 2004 event.

Still can't believe he couldn't find backers for the ring game.

He had backers, just didn't know about it in time. When he tried to get in later, they told him it was too late. Then someone told him if he could get the entry together, he could get in. As he was putting that together he was told again that it was too late.

I've known Jason since he was a kid. He's been up in my room here several times during the tourney. He used to hang around Gary and I when he was about 14 years old. Learned banking from some of the best but look out IPT if he can get in the tour, because 8-ball is his best game! I believe he's going to play in the qualifiers.

What a lot of people don't know about Jason is that he was on his way to becoming a top pro several years ago. He'd been playing in a lot of events and "paying his dues" so to speak. Then he lost interest in pool and life in general when his brother killed himself. Had this not happened, I believe Jason Miller would be known as one of the top players in the country by now! He's now showing some enthusiasm about playing again and as shown by his victory in the banks, he's capable of "getting there"!

just more hot air!

I was at the VIP seating and saw Jason's shot perfectly. It was dead on for two rails cross side but Jason did not recognize the shot and chose to one rail it across. he did not hit it stiff enough inside to hold up the out angle and he went long allowing Jason to run four and out. It was indeed a great match. About two hours later that evening I talked with him in the action room. I asked if he knew how to bank two rails across and did he recognize the shot was on. H said he did not know the shot was on and did not see the two railer as an option. I had a five dollar sweat bet on Kirkwood with a guy sitting next to me. When Jason's last shot came up, I turned and said "two rails across side. It is dead on". The guy retorted, he is a nine ball player he is not a banker. I thought to myself, here he was in the finals and someone can say he is not a banker. I loved watching that match and Jason Kirkwood showed some true grit in fighting his way back I for one would love to show Jason how to make the two railer.
