Jayson Shaw’s Long Cue

Jayson Shaw‘s appears to play the entire time for all shots with what appears to be an 8 or 10 inch extension on the butt of his cue. Is this unusual for a top level pro player to do this, particularly one of his stature - well under 6 feet tall?

I remember Earl Strickland experimenting with an extremely long cue, among other things, for a while, and I believe some other pros including Shane do use 2 inch or 4 inch butt or shaft extensions, but I can’t remember a player playing with this long of a cue for all their shots, in the Mosconi Cup.

What has he stated in interviews are the reasons he likes to use such a long cue, and I’m curious how long he has been using a cue this long?

Shaw is taller than the average pro. He’s at least 6’ and roughly the same height as Niels. Both of whom are taller than SVB, who is around 5’10”.

Look for example at Fedor who is not any less when it comes to height...plays standard length cue with his grip usually at the butt sleeve. If you watch Jayson closely especially where his grip is...on most shots it is on the wrap area with so much of the rest with extension behind. It looks weird to me but it doesn't matter how it looks to me or anybody else it's working for him in rotation games especially 9-ball which looks like a kid's game for him.
He did not use that long cue playing black ball, chinese 8-ball ...and I don't remember if he even played straight pool with extension.
There is certainly a reason why he likes it for certain games but is it something everybody should use...definitely not (imo).
Heck...even for me who is 6'6" 68" cue is too much and I don't like so much weight behind.
The funniest thing is looking at the youngsters who look at him or SVB and copying them ...the same reason why many buying same cue or cue brand).

Don’t you still think it’s strange? I’m 6’4” and use either a 60” or 62” cue. Most pro players are using either a 58” or 60” cue, while Shaw is using what appears to be a 66”-68” cue? It does seem to be working very well for him, but it’s not like you’re seeing any of the other pros doing the same.

I have a custom 63" cue currently (31.5" split carbon fiber shaft and butt) and recently I got the chance to shoot with a friends Roadline with the 8" extension added on. The extra 3" of cue behind my normal grip position was immediately noticeable. I'd almost liken it to a rudder in the way it felt, both in the weight I had behind my hand being more and being able to feel something behind my hand (extra length of cue) .

Now I'm a nobody who isn't a great shot, but that roadline felt great, I'd compare it to my other passion of fishing in which a longer rod of the same material helps you feel your way around a bit more. The roadline gave me a SENSE of more feel, it may just been my mind, but if it works it works right?

As for me among the pros most naturally looking with a longer cue is Ruslan Chinakhov but he is around 6'5" and uses 6 or 8" extension on his Mezz or Exceed butt.

I have a Cuetec r360 with a 6" extension. The extension helps me in that I get down more on a shot as I stretch to hold the cue. This has carried over to my Becue. With the small extension, it is 63" vs the Cuetec at 64".

I remember Ken Shuman saying the extension seemed to add at least half a ball to SVB's game when he first started using it full time.

I don’t think Shaw is 6 feet. If he is, then Boyes is at least 6’4” and Kaci is at least 6’7”from the videos of them standing side-by-side accepting their Mosconi Cup trophy. Yes, he may be slightly taller than SVB, who is no more than 5’9”.

Shane is 6' and Shaw about 6'1"....I'm 5'11" and I stood next to both and they are taller than me...It has been reported in the past Shane is 6'...

That’s strange, as I’ve walked by both of them and my impression was that they were quite short. Of course I am 6’4”, so I could be mistaken!
