JB Rugged Case

What are the main differences between a JB Ultimate and JB Basic besides the extra top handle and pocket?
Is it worth to pay the extra money to get the Ultimate?
Thanks in advance.

I think that's about it, the ultimate often comes in a two tone color scheme as well. I like the ultimate as I find the top handle and extra pocket worth it, but either way you go they're great cases!

They are STUPIDLY expensive, along with practically every other billiards related product.

Not as "STUPIDLY" expensive as having your cue get damaged from a cheap and poorly constructed case. If you can produce a superior product for less money, have at it. I'm sure you will sell loads of your inexpensive items since you think you have it figured out.

Don't conflate issues. I see well constructed cases for all sorts of NPR products, all of which are significantly cheaper than pool cue cases.

Whilst there is a market for overinflated goods, there will always be suppliers more than happy to provide them.

Jb rugged cases are the best bang for the buck.
After SBE the waiting list is fairly long but it's well worth the wait.
And the warranty is unmatched.

Ron, I know that there is no love lost between you and John. Can't say that I don't blame you. I know, you hate the thought of putting a 50 in someones pocket for a DVD also.

You could always buy a Sterling and have it fall apart on you promptly. Then spend another 80 bucks fixing it. I know about that one. I have 2. They do make great storage cases tho.

To be fair, I saw one of the Rugged cases. They don't come any more rugged than that.

Unless you get one made from Teflon.

I have a couple of GTF's. Gotta spend a bit if you like your cues.

Love mine and if you keep an eye on the sale forum you can get decent deals all the time. Mine was like brand new for $135 (thanks, Kidwill). I don't think that's too bad for the peace of mind it gives me protecting the $2000+ worth of junk I carry in it.

You sir need a time out!

And people wonder why pool is in the dumps?!?! It's in the dumps because of the "STUPIDLY" people involved;)
He has a point, I see well made gun cases and archery cases for a fraction of the price of a cue case. You see this in a lot of things, just walk in a boating store. The same products you can find elsewhere are like 3 to 5 times the price in a boat supply..

It does not take a super expensive case to protect your cue. I actually prefer a cheap case I can just kick under the table when I play. Not a case I have to baby sit all night afraid someone may touch it.

There is a difference between someone making a hand made case and a plastic compound bow or rifle case blown from a mold.

My Compound case was only $65. But if it were designed to hold cues, I am sure that I wouldn't be putting any of mine in it.

My self inflating fishing vests are $200 each. Thats ok. If I fall in, I would like to know that they are going to work. Some things like a Life Jacket are worth spending the money on. Yer comparing apples and oranges here.

My Ice Suit is a water tight Floater also. Gotta pay if you want protection. 30 seconds to Hypothermia otherwise.

I have to agree with the JB cases being overpriced and I am not targeting JB cases but all pool related crap.

It's a niche market that demands high prices.

You're going to tell me a cheap ass JB case is worth hundreds of dollars?

Those JB cases are known to warp cues. They are so tight that it bends the shafts.

An expert case maker, Jack Justis, has already mentioned this.

That is just not true. They are not that tight and they don't put any side pressure on the shafts. I've had a Justis, a Whitten, and a JB...I'll take the JB interior all day long for protecting my cues. Love Jack's work but his interiors are lacking. If I could get a Justis with a JB interior I'd be a happy guy as that would be perfect, but since I can't I will stick with a JB for now.

John has pissed a lot of people off so there is a lot of misinformation out there to try and discredit his stuff. I'm not a big JB fan personally, I think he causes his own problems and does nobody any good in the process, but he makes a damn good case with the best interior I've ever seen.

I think the prices for a Rugged case are very good, nothing else I've seen can match the quality at the price. They are well built out of solid materials and they hold up great.

I don't like how tight they are. You are jamming your cues in a case that is tight is not good for the finish on the cue. There is something called friction over time it will dull the luster of the cue. Lets not forget the fabric vs fabric contact of the interior on the wraps of a cue.

A good example is when you use a regular towel on a car. You get swirl marks on the clear coat.

I have three, they aren't that tight. My cues slide in pretty much under their own weight. Beleive whatever you want, but I'd put a cue in a JB interior before anything else I've had, especially over a Justis interior.

I've had a couple GTF cases and those were tight, not my favorite, but my ruggeds are a perfect fit.

The GTF interiors are exactly the same. Never had a problem. I can't figure how there would be any unequal pressure exerted on the shafts or butts in any fashion.

If you have an explanation for this, I would like to hear it.

Jack and John were arguing back and forth for years. It was probably just something that Jack threw at John as John was putting his tube interiors down
forever also.

I have cases with tube interiors also, they bang around a bit but have never had anything damaged. It was just an arguing point between both makers.

Jack and John have hard heads and neither were willing to concede. I do believe that they are both in love now. They finally made up.

John probably hates my guts by now so wouldn't sell me a case if his life depended on it. But if I were looking for another, a Rugged would be the first on the list.

GTF interior is similar or same, but the overall size is smaller for the outer housing. I had a GTF 1x2 and have 2 rugged 1x2s and the difference is immediately noticeable. The last shaft slid in firmly in the GTF, it drops right in with my ruggeds under its own weight.

I don't think the GTFs are bad or cause harm, but they are snug. My ruggeds are not. The 2x5 gets a little snug with a full 2x5 setup I guess, I never use it that way though, I only load it 2x4 at which point things slide right in effortlessly. 1x2s are effortless fully loaded.
