JB Rugged Case

I owe both rugged and ultimate rugged JB cases. Other than the top handle and extra pocket there is no difference I can tell.

The interior is the same.

The exterior material is the same.

The attachment points and external hardware appear to be exactly the same.

I bought my 2x3 rugged for $90 shipped and my 3x6 rugged for $110 shipped. At last years SBE I bought a 3/4 - 2/5 Ultimate rugged for $150.

The prices have gone up. At this years SBE the same ultimate rugged case I bought last year was selling for $200. An ultimate with leather pockets was north of $320.

I think the JB rugged cases are the best case for the money I ever bought. I'm not so sure at the current price points they are the no brainer they once were, still the best cases made, but the price point is starting to hurt. Going to be tough to attract the beginner or casual player at those prices IMHO.

Holy cow...Giuseppe would be a great alternative.

That is just not true. They are not that tight and they don't put any side pressure on the shafts. I've had a Justis, a Whitten, and a JB...I'll take the JB interior all day long for protecting my cues. Love Jack's work but his interiors are lacking. If I could get a Justis with a JB interior I'd be a happy guy as that would be perfect, but since I can't I will stick with a JB for now.

John has pissed a lot of people off so there is a lot of misinformation out there to try and discredit his stuff. I'm not a big JB fan personally, I think he causes his own problems and does nobody any good in the process, but he makes a damn good case with the best interior I've ever seen.

I think the prices for a Rugged case are very good, nothing else I've seen can match the quality at the price. They are well built out of solid materials and they hold up great.

I have to inspect the interior to see whether it is abrasive on the cue's finish.

Listen to the sound as the cues are stuffed in there..that can damage a finish, an edge, or a wrap.

It's a great product, but I would NEVER buy one based on principal. I voted with my wallet for several others...

What are the main differences between a JB Ultimate and JB Basic besides the extra top handle and pocket?
Is it worth to pay the extra money to get the Ultimate?
Thanks in advance.

To get back on track and answer your question...

For me, it's worth the extra money to get the top handle, I use it often. The case is really well made and the top handle is very strong...I love mine.

I have had many Instroke and JB Cases over the years; both leather and leather-like material and my wife and I even have matching bags (her's a purse and mine a butterfly 4x8) - I can tell you I feel very comfortable w/the Rugged line of cases and they are priced right, and I don't feel I have to baby the case as I do w/leather.

Just so you know I have also owned and used many other case builder's products as well. Good luck in your choice.

To me the ultimate rugged case is worth it. I keep my joint protecters in the small top pocket, where they are easy to find along with a tip pick. And the top handle in used also.

What if a cue was standing in the case...;)

Those JB cases are known to warp cues. They are so tight that it bends the shafts.

An expert case maker, Jack Justis, has already mentioned this.

Well I was threatened by jack personally for this post. I have pics and witness to back up my issue with him but since I don't want to start a battle with the God of cue cases I'll delete my post.

Name one person or show me one cue that was warped by a JB ultra pad interior. You sir clearly don't know what you are talking about. I have some really nice cues that have been stored in a JB case for Over a year and they are straight as an arrow.

Ron,

Most of the animus has nothing to do with whether or not John Barton makes a quality case. The highest percentage of negative comments come from people who dislike John personally and take their frustration out on his products. John is far from a perfect individual. He has very strongly held opinions and likes to debate with others on and off the forum. He does however design and manufacture some very high quality products. Are they the best? That is up to debate.

Bs

I don,t know John Barton or care to know him, but I have had experence with the cases he sells. There is not a better designed or more durable case out there than the JB rugged with ultra-pad interior. They will not from 2 years personal experience, damage a shaft . I keep hearing these guys complain about warped shafts caused by JB cases. Post pictures , let's here from the people that has actually had this happen to them!! My JB rugged has been loaded full for over a year and they are straight as an arrow.

Ron,

Glad you edited your original post. Could not understand whom you were addressing. JB Cases is one of the most respected manufacturers in the pool and billiards business. Like you, I've never heard of anyone complaining about warped or damaged shafts from a JB case. Voted with my money and purchased one. Continued satisfaction with yours.

I thought they were a good value at $100-$150 when they came out, at the current prices they probably still are but it would be hard for me to buy now knowing what they cost before.

Seyberts has a nice 4x8 black with blue interior ultimate rugged for $190 minus 9.50 in Seyberts bucks with free shipping. Not real bad for a quality 4x8 case.
