He has been battling cancer. And the mask is like what doctors wear when they are operating. Some people need to wear them in public when their immune systems are weak.

Haven't been here in a while, just checked in to see what's up. Plus, I a new but used upgraded computer that I believe now gets actual images instead of only text. Anyway, just popped in for a look and yours was the first post I latched on to.
I noticed here a while ago that several pool players were dealing with cancer. This made me wonder if it could be the chalk. I mean, every day, bending down over that cloth sucking in that dust, who knows what it might do to the lungs, and anything else?
I'm just kidding. I actually think breathing in chalk dust every day may be good for you, as long as you start at a young age to acclimate your system. I thought the Michael Jackson mask reference was funny because I too didn't know what you meant. I thought you meant he had plastic surgery or was wearing an actual Michael Jackson mask while playing opponents. I always thought it would be cool to beat someone while wearing a mask. In fact, believe it or not, I did it once. Not a mask per se, but a fake beard with sunglasses, and the guy I was playing, who knew me, never recognized me during the brief but highly enjoyable beating I gave him on the table.
