I bought this a few years back. It was from the Joe Balsis collection. I am wondering if anyone had ever seen Joe use it. I have my doubts, I would think that he purchased it as a collectable.

Mike...It seems extremely unlikely, since round chalk was no longer produced in the US long before Joe even started playing. It almost has to be a collectable.

Scott, Do you have any idea when they stopped producing round chalk? I bought a few things from his collection. I am wondering, do you know if Joe was much of a collector?

Mike...I wish I had my copy of The Billiard Encyclopedia here with me. It's still in a storage locker out in MT. IIRC they quit making round chalk in the 20's. I have no idea if Joe was a collector, but it seems fairly unlikely, as he sold his cues to various people for almost nothing. My good friend, Jerry Briesath bought Joe's Balabushka, after Joe did an exhibition in Jerry's room in Madison, WI, for only a few hundred. Jerry held on to it for decades, and sold to a collector friend of mine recently for $26,000!

I have a large chalk collection so you would think that I should know when they stopped making round chalk. When I purchased the item, it being labelled from the Balsis collection had nothing to do with the purchase. I bought it because I had never seen one before. From what you say it does not sound like he was a collector. Also great deal for Jerry.
If you are ever up my way I would be interested in spending time around the table. I couldn?t justify paying your mileage (I live 500 miles straight north of Toronto), but I would definitely take a few days worth of lessons. I have attached a link to my towns claim to fame. Come on up to see the attraction and we will get together.

If you want to see some amazing pictures click on Picture Gallery, then Miscellaneous Photo Gallery. The pics on page 4 make it appear that the kids and the bear are together. Well must be going, I have a human magnet in the form of a snooker table calling me to the basement.
