Johann Chua. What a beast!!

I am a fan of his, he came to Hanoi last year for a tournament and truly shone and inspired, check out this video he posted of shots he made in official matches.

check out the one at 1:30, it was in the final of B52 tournament in Hanoi, I was watching live also and I must say "wtf??"

Yeah i too think that he's great and should be winning many tournaments but sadly he seems to have a problem overcoming and breaking into the A-listers from philipines like Orcollo, Biado or Jeffrey Ignacio and gettinf results like they do.

I wish him all the best :)

he does play money matches, even, with top Phi players and have won and lost. he is ranked 9th in WPA ranking which is higher than Orcullo

fact is he is not exposed to international scene and has not travel much for tournaments. last year he said he wanted to go to US in 2015, we all know that Ignacio came earlier 2015. Johann will be representing Phi in the World Pool Masters 2015.

He does not have the fluid stroke as Biado and Ignacio, but he is trained from an young age, very rare among Phi players who grew up playing money games, he did not play money games until he was 14-15 or so, only trained. He is among few Phi players that turned down cue sponsorship and bought his own cue, which is a South West.

I think Lee Vann Corteza played in the China Open with a SW also, I am not sure though, just looked at pics.

Yeah Johann southwest is gorgeous.
But i tot Lee van is sponsored by Diviney along w Biado.

Thats the thing, anyone can beat anyone in the world gambling as you always have another shot if u lose.
But in a competition, u only have 1 shot and he seems to have trouble overcoming A listers , theres a reason why Ignacio n biado were exposed to the international scene over him.

And speaking of southwest, im a southwest fan f.y.i, love the way it feels , looks n hits but a respected pro once told me you can't possibly play international competition with a southwest or any other custom cue and i stared at him doumbfounded in disbelief as i always thought its the indian not the arrow and he asked me, do u see many pros using custom or southwest cue and i was speechless and finally uttered Kim ga young using sw n biado using diviney. He replied' there you go, the reason why most pro is using ld shaft is because its easier to catch and adapt to the deflection on different tables n clothes and i understood.
By the way, he loves his custom n owns many Dpk n Franklin-era southwest so i knew what he was talking about.

Just my 2cents :)

It's true Lee Vann is, or was, sponsored by Diveney, but I these 2 pics were taken in the recent China Open, it does look like SW to me.

the argument of LD vs custom has been for long now, and I have the exact opposite thoughts against the pro you mentioned, I think it's the indian, and the arrow just supports him.

how can he explain Taiwanese players, Chinese players, Rodney, Frost, etc?

I have talked to numerous players, and they do have different approach, aiming and strokes, they have difference preference in how their cues perform, that's what decides which cue suits them. and sponsorship also.

i dont want to flame another discussion on cues, to each his own :)

Yeah that looks like a beautiful ebony sw.

I'm not looking to flame another discussion , more of seeking to hear other ppl's opinion and learn :)

Yeah , i do asked myself why does the taiwanese swear by their southwest , wu and jung lin - sw , yu lung dpk so what i can defer is sw has been ingrained in tw's pool scene and em taiwanese used it since young and thats what they are used to.
A taiwanese pro also told me they order at least 10 shaft with their southwest n choose their playing shaft w the lowest deflectiin

On the other hand, numerous more recent world titleshas been won with players using mezz or predator , think appleton mika albin ouschan .
A good player once told me why wld u want more deflection when you can have less to make ur aiming easier ?

F.y.i i have been using conventional shaft and prefer it since i started playing 2 yrs ago and recently start to play more competitive and choose to jump on ld bandwagon as i believe it reaps more benefits in the long run .

What do u think of what i just said Ctran ?
Really looking for a healthy discussion n learn :)

They look good, nothing overly fancy just simplicity either with 6 or 9 pointer along w gorgeous veneers and it hits solid like a dream , not whippy not overly stiff just right , really powerful esp the ebony ones with awesome feedback and it slices through the cueball like a samurai sword thru butter.

Try someone else sw for urself.
some love it some swear by it some hate it, to each his own :)

Maybe there is some truth to this but we'll only know by asking the "Indians" themselves...with regards to Johann, I don't think his cue plays a factor with his results. He placed very high in the 2014 World 9 ball tourney in Doha (reached quarter finals) & again quarters or semis in the most recent MP 10 ball Cup that had a monster field. I just think he lacks exposure and he isn't seasoned enough yet. I hope that it is only a matter of time before he becomes one of the elites...

Watching him play at the tv table last night, I can say he is the complete package in defeating China Open champion Albin Ouschan. In fact I like him better than Jeff Ignacio. He is certainly fun to watch. Hope he makes it to the US soon.

he's currently world #9. he's been with the top caliber players in our country for the past 5 years, finished top 5-8 in the last w9b going through the qualifying stage undefeated. then top 5-8 in last year's china open, 2 semis in japan open. the only difference is that he hasnt been to the US.
