Ok, here is the second Johnston City photo that I need ID help with. Who can ID the players and maybe even the ladies.

quote from Fast Larry
...and those are not players but railbirds sitting around.

I don't know about that...the guy next to the gal has a cue case as does the lone gentleman sitting at the end of the table.

Of course, they might just be lounge musicians and those are cases for their clarinets.

How can you remember that far back FL? I have trouble with events of this afternoon!

Regards,

Ken (look...a post from me to FL and I didn't flame him!)

Here are some hints.

The initials of the 5 men in the picture are:

J. P.
J. G.
J. B.
D. T.
R. B.

Fast Larry is definitely not in the picture. And all 5 of those guys could eat him alive!

Any guesses?

The only one I am positive of is Jack Breit next to the lady. "No glasses"

I'll give you part of the answer now.
Starting from the left, the shooter is J. G., the smoker is R. B., then Jack Breit (the well known Jersey Red), Red's wife, Joe Procita, D. T.'s wife, and D. T.
Ask some of the oldtimers like Sonny Springer.

More later,

Ed

OK Ed, I got Jack. How about Robert Byrne (The Smoker)? Also Ed, did you look at the other Johnston City photo? I was told the guy farthest right (inside the 1/2 circle) is Onofro Laurie. Do/did you know him?

yappingwolf,

The original picture that hermicudas posted was the same one Jimmy Caras gave me last year when I visited him in Jax. Only the pic I have is blown up. We then went with him to Harley's and Harley was able to ID some of them, and some of his customers was able to ID some others. There's still a couple names missing - the two guys on the right side, and Daddy Warbucks' bodyguard.

I take no credit for personally being able to ID any of these guys, I'm just pssing along some info.

Ed,
Its hard to see the shooter (Junior Goff?), looks like Alton Whitlow too. Still working on the others.

Kilroy would know too but he doesn't get around so good anymore.

Now, the rest of the story.

The shooter is J. Gordon Guy.
Smoker is Ray Booth.
The last is Don Tozer. His wife is next to him.

My information is that many, many pictures from Johnston City are in the possession of the Jansco heirs. We need someone who can communicate with Joann Jansco and others.

By the way, Onofrio Lauri is not in the first picture. I don't think he ever went to Johnston City.
Neither Alton (Babyface) Whitlow nor Omaha Fats is in that picture either. The skinny guy on the right is not Cornbread Red.

Something about these old photos appeals to a lot of pool fans. The old magazine "The Snap' came up with quite a few. Since most message boards now accept pictures, I'd like to see more that contain players that are a little difficult to identify.

Best wishes to all,

Ed

Ed, you're a good dude and I agree with you 100%, the more old photos the better. Thanks a bunch for the IDs and now I'm back to square 1 on the 2 guys in the yellow circle.

Old Photos

I used to live around Junior Goff and he took me to see his photos
and old stuff. Really cool stuff. I should tried to get copies made or something but I did not.

In Sanford NC there is one of the best pictures I have ever seen.
It guys from Johnson City sitting in bleachers with almost
everyone present. Below it has the names of every person in it.
I would love to have a copy of that.
The guy who owns it had it blown up and framed really nice.
The photo place did a great job with it. Very clear.
If anyone is near there I will pay for a copy!!
