Hello I have been playing pool now around 3 years, and started like many people just playing with friends at a local bar with 8 and 9 footers. Then I was asked to join an APA league, like everyone I started as a 4 and was not very good at all. I was moved just after my first match to a 3, and within a session or two I placed 2nd in top gun out of around 100 players. I was moved to a 4 and was learning my stroke, bridge, stance, and speed of play, and was improving every week. And now that I’m a 5 looking back at the 3s playing every week I can’t believe that I was once that bad.

Now a new league has come into our area TAP. I have only played one week and played as a 4, and since we are all new to TAP in the area most was 4s, but I played a guy that was a 4 also and played more like a good 6. And only after one week I have moved to a 3, not that I complaining I think that I should be higher than a 3 but I will take advantage of it. Do other people have stories about TAP league; is it a good league to play in? Or just any info on it that you have...

In my area TAP, and BCA are the next steps up. APA is a good intro to league pool, I found that TAP and BCA (in my area - the NW) have a higher level of play. With call pocket, and open after the break, (which are also pretty much the BCA rules) you need to have a little better handle on actual strategy and skills. BCA has a different rating/scoring system and many great players and pros have come through it.
Also compared with the APA, the tougher competition in TAP, you tend to be rated at least one level lower. The 25pts allowed to play per team in the TAP league compared to APA's 23pts/team, and the way the matches are scored allows teams to stay together longer, and not get broken up because the players rating increase.
I am not trying to sound like a commercial for anybody. I started in APA, I went to nat'ls twice - it was great.
When I got better though I had to move to BCA, and TAP. Also TAP introduced me to "The Super Billiards Expo" put on by Allen Hopkins - A MUST for pool fans.
Sorry to be so long winded, simply put , if you enjoy pool play it all. Hanging out with friends and playing pool is good anytime!

I don’t think that there is a BCA league in my area (middle of nowhere Virginia) but if there was one I would give it a try. I like playing and improving in my game. I’m thinking in APA that I may be getting moved soon since I have only lost 1 match and have beat a 7 and 6. But with Tap I would think that the score keeping would keep you at a more consistent skill level. The one thing that I like is that it is call your shots and open after the break. That is the way that I have been playing for a few years when not playing APA. And that is what I hate about APA is people will just hit and hope their ball goes in.

TAP is a different HC system. You can't compare APA rating to TAP. BCA & TAP's system allows real players without penalising them for improving. The APA just wants your money.

I have found TAP much better at handicapping than the APA, it's all computer generated. If you get your log in to the players module you can see all your stats on every game played. This of course relies on whoever is scoring to do so correctly, this is the only problem I see with it. If they don't score correctly both your stats and handicap could be thrown off.
