Joint fit of aftermarket carbon fiber shaft.

FWIW, I also shoot with my chin on my cue but I'm not bothered by non-flush joint fittings. On one of my cues, the shaft is a solid 1-2mm bigger than the butt. Not sure why, I just don't notice it.

Also, the chin on cue thing is extremely common in pool players these days. An extreme example is Niels Feijen, who is able to cue close to his mouth because he cues so far to the right of his face.

Just bought a radial pin Rhino CF shaft and very happy with it overall but the joint doesn't fit totally flush on all butt surfaces, not horrible but totally noticeable, both on a Black Pearl (Al Batista) and a Mac Cues custom, both are Phillipean custom cues. The butt/shaft joint fit with the stock maple shaft is good but with the Rhino you can feel a bit of overhang on one half and flush or slightly negative on one side. Some may be the shaft and some the butts, hard for me to tell with just calipers, might me concentricity issues with one or both components.

So is this common for using an aftermarket shaft on a butt it wasn't fit for? I'm a bit OCD with stuff like this, my Black Pearl has sterling silver rings that are ever so slightly proud since the silver sanded harder than the wood, probably .002" raised. The butt is more than this but probably .006"-.010" off in spots but hard to measure.

Do people get CF shafts custom fit/sanded to the butt before the butt is clear coated to ensure a good flush fit? Al Batista is building me a new burl/ebony cue and wondering if I should get another Rhino cue sent to him to sand flush before the cue is clear coated so I have both a maple and CF shaft that fits perfect.
Whatever you do, don't think you can sand your shaft to fit, it's not how it works. As for aftermarket shaft, different brands etc. There's no agreed upon standard for joint pins, joint collar diameter etc. There's also different ways of make cues and shafts. Most Filipino makers finish the shaft and butt as one piece, the use a sharp lathe tool to break the finish at the joint. This is a quick way of doing it, but it's not super accurate. For an accurate joint collar size, you need to use carbide sanding mandrels, it's a slower process and the mandrels themselves are about $400-500 so it's pretty expensive.
Rhino shafts are made with a 21.5mm / .846" joint diameter, you can't sand down that to fit
The tube itself needs to be cut at whatever diameter the joint collar is and a new plug will have to made that's exactly the same size, again it's a much more time consuming task and it costs you as a customer.

The Jacoby V4 carbon fiber can be ordered with various collar sizes. For instance, they have one specifically for south west, specifically for Schon which fits many others.. Meucci, McDermott which is. 850 etc.
Any questions let me know.
