Joint material? Ever seen this stuff?

I got a few rods from a retired cue maker and have personally never seen it before. It looks to be coated with a dark brown substance and when turned down it lightens up ALOT! I can live with that just wondering if I should switch the painters mask out for a respirator and gloves when handling it. Thanks guys.

No offense, but painter's masks don't keep anything out, really. A good dust collection system and a real mask are in order when cutting any man made, and most nature made materials. Your pics look to be a fine weave phenolic material, and yes a resperator should be worn for any cutting of such. The dust is very fine, and can and will cause lung issues if not filtered out. I run my Delta Dust collector everytime I cut or sand any phenolic or wood item, to me it's just not worth the danger. Being safe is the only way IMO.

Thanks Dave for the response and no offence taken. I wear goggles and a heavier duty white painters mask along with my dust collection system. If I am working with something dangerous I wear a full face respirator. I had never seen the material so i am just being cautious. Thank you for the description and advice I greatly appreciate it!
 
It is cotton fiber. It looks to be the same as the old Brunswick cues, such as the Titlist, used except that was black. Its pretty neat stuff but you'll need to seal the end to protect it from moisture.

Thanks for the info Ryan. I also got 2 feet of black in the deal so I will be careful with that too.
