Joint Pin....which way round?

Firstly may I explain that my history is in making only snooker cues.
So I apologise if my questions sound basic to you experts.

In 2 piece snooker cues that join in the middle, it was always the 'male' pin that was fitted into the shaft as the id of the hole was smaller than the hole for fitting a female insert. -In theory at this point of the shaft there was more wood around the hole and therefore slightly stronger.

Is there any particular reason it is the opposite way round on a pool cue?

One thought I had while reading your post was that a pool shaft is normally 29" long. If the pin were in the shaft, the OAL is now 30"+. Should someone want a longer shaft, say 30", add the pin and you're at 31"+. You're starting to get to the point where the shaft may be too long for the case.
It's also more practical to buy a longer shaft than it is to extend a handle.
