Joint protectors - what exactly do they protect?

I always thought that the joint protectors were made to stop the joint from getting knocked out of alignment if dropped. With the protector screwed tight into the butt or shaft material the pin stays solid if moderately compromised???

If you drop a cue hard enough to bend a pin, you likely have a lot of additional damage.

The jps protect the faces from minor damage that can cause minor misalignment.

The right angle and I'm breaking the pin with a joint ptotector
I really doubt it. If properly fitted with the right protectors, the protector covering the pin becomes an extension of the cue based on how the flat part mates with the butt end of the shaft. One would really have to make an effort to damage the pin with the protector on there. I'm not buying your theory at all, as if it's better off without a protector than with one on there.
