joint protectors

Heat yes, dehumidifier yes, Humidifier yes, AC no, My shop is in the basement, It stays quite comfortable. That's why I season my own wood.

Well hell, Mike, that's VERY controlled and what I've been harping on. I'd feel quite comfortable buying one of your cues, not to speak of the fact I've also heard great things about the rest of your work.

IMO, there are a lot of cue buying addicts that don't even give this a consideration. All they want is a cue made by ANYONE outside of a bigger name production company, assuming that it has some sort of exclusivity or is better made. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Surely you mean included in the price of the cue. A buyer would pay for the work one way or another...don't think it's avarice because you can't expect a skilled artisan to do the kind of work in some fancy joint caps for free. Your thread sounds a bit like entitlement folk wantin' to live off the gubment...or for most pool players for that matter. :) ;)

On a real fancy cue (say $3000 and up), I would like to see cuemakers include joint caps as standard practice but many do not. Personally, I think that a lot of cuemakers see joint caps as a hassle.

yes,,,i guess it's how you look at it. jp's should be part of the package,,,not "i'll make 'em but you have to pay for 'em." just make 'em, add to the cost, but don't tell me. but if i'm paying over $5000, they better have them.

jp's are a hassle. peterson hated doing them.

Thank you Sir
I read some of your post under controlled storage safes, very interesting observations. I enjoyed them.

My cue is a Scruggs and I have TS logo'd protectors but they are plastic.

If I've playing with the cue I don't like Gina like protectors for the cue especially if it adds to the cost of buying the cue.
when buing a ginacue and you want his custom ones they are 450.00 for the set and 600.00 with silver ring work! black boar can charge as much as 1500.00 i heard. the king of the protectors is richard black he makes some awsome ones

$1.5k for jp's ?! Wow, with my budget I could buy the jp's only... with a 12-month payment agreement. Nothing like showing off your over $1k joint protectors to your friends... and blushing when they snicker at you behind your back ;)

Well Joint Protector, are that Protectors of Joints. Pretty is Nice, but Functional is FINE...

High Dollar Q's should have Fancy Protectors to go along with the Price of the Cue.

Kind of like taking a Classic Porsche you have Restored to the Guy who will paint and car for $29.99. Just don't look right...

I have friends who own $50 - $100 cues. They alll used to "snicker" when we played and probably said, "The fuc_ing guy is crazy. Why would he spend that much for a cue? (maybe JPs too for that matter)." That continued until some of the guys bought more expensive cues. Now, they seem to say, "I wish I had the dough to afford that."

On my side I still envy a lot of the collectors here for having such a fine collection. Each one has his own world I guess. One cue at a time I guess. ;)

The purpose of the joint protector is very simple, To minimize dirt and moisture off the joint and out of the shaft hole, Also to protect the Joint pin if your one of those people who just like to shoot the cues into the case like it's a dart. Even with them you will still get moisture between on the faces when the cue is apart. Moisture can, and will go wherever it pleases.

Good post Mike. I use joint protectors and always have on all my cues whether "high dollar" or not. I feel that they are a definite must have if you want to take good care of a cue. I don't worry about fancy, although in the case of a Gina, high dollar Scruggs or a Barry Szamboti, I might pop for matching JPs. I order my Delrin JPs from a very nice guy in Hawaii named Alton Takata who makes them for many of the well known cuemakers. If you need his info PM me.

I can't see the jp's on this Black Boar being cheap!!

I thought paying $60 for a set was a bit much!!! :o

Aramith JP's

These jp's were made for a customer of mine by Steve Lomax, Alto, GA.
The set was $150.00

I personally would have liked the 3 piece set to have an 8 ball jp for one of the shafts so you could distinguish between the two shafts without having to remove them from the case.

If you want a set for your cue, Steve can be reached at stevenl@alltel.net
or 706-776-1252 after 6pm EST

You would not need to send your cue but only have accurate measurments of the shaft collars, joint, pin size and pin length to insure a good fit.

Steve is in Vegas this week doing leather wraps and cue repairs with Joe Blackburn so an email is best at this time.

The JP's do look much better than the pics.
