I have an older schon that ive grown to love, and ive noticed something about the joint that i would like some input on. This particular stick has what i am told is an "interference fit". The pin is 5/16 14 of course....and you tighten the shaft down to where its almost touching the butt, maybe its 1/2cm from being all the way down, then that last 1/2 cm is extremely tight (its probably about 3/4s of a turn until its completely seated). Ive noticed when i bounce my cue on the floor, the whole cue kind of hums almost, like a tuning fork, and i think its because of this joint, does that sound right?
Ive had 2 shafts made for this cue, by 2 different cuemakers, and i told them what i wanted (a fit like i have now with the shaft and butt).....but neither shaft is anywhere close to how the originals fit. The reason i ask is 2 fold........i wanted to have maybe a predator z2 shaft fitted to my cue, but i want it to fit like my schon shafts. Also, although i love this cue, id like to get a nicer custom down the road, but i think i want this same setup due to the hit. Most cues just feel totally dead to me now, i havent shot with them all by any means, but i havent felt one yet that feels like this one. Is what i have just unique? Do you have to have some kind of matched sets of pins and inserts to get this type of fit? Is it just a matter of machining down an insert until it fits like this? One cuemaker told me that these types of fits are a problem because over time they can wear and loosen, etc..........but my schon was prob built in 89 or 90.....i bought it used and you could tell its been shot with alot, and ive shot 4days a week with for the last couple years and its still just like it was when i got it. Just curious about some of this and was hoping for some insights.
