Joss Standard Shaft or Predator Z?

Joss makes a GREAT beginners cue I think, absolutely perfect for a person starting out and will last for a long time.

Shhhhhh....don't tell that to Ralf Souquet or Mike Sigel (before he made his own)

I have a predator 314. I've owned a joss. I like the predator a lot better - mainly because it's stiffer. Some other people may disagree, but I feel that it's true that you get more spin on the CB with the pred, especially on follow shots, but a pre-requisite for that is having a decent stroke to begin with.

From what you posted, it sounds like you have a bad stroke or you're hitting too far outside on the ball. Don't buy a predator thinking that it will compensate for a bad stroke and help you miscue less - it won't. You will still miscue, probably even more with the predator z, as someone else pointed out.

the joss shaft is ALOT stiffer than the 314 or Z.

I'd have to disagree. I had a joss, and it wasn't very stiff.

I propose a swordfight with cues between Egg and Spartan as a preliminary opening act to Cap vs. VAP....see whose shaft breaks first. (wait a minute...maybe that should be the headline act)

the winner gets to witness the great matt staton perform his great jumps.

(on my way to but a cue-tech right now)

It very well could turn into a 10 page thread...but in the end who are you going to listen to and what are you going to base your decision on?

Those two shafts are like night and day. Sounds like you have either a shitty stroke or are trying to apply too much english to get spin and that's why you're miscuing.

It still boils down to TWO shafts and nothing else. So I'd say buy both. Nothing says you can only have one shaft. See which one works best and then sell the other. Otherwise, if you're broke, buy the Joss and learn how to use it. I think it'll serve you much better in the long run for feel, balance and a larger variety of shots. They really play good.

WTF IS THIS? YOU CAN"T ACTUALLY TELL ME I JUST READ A POST WHERE YOU (DRIVERMAKER) RECOMMENDED A PREDATOR DID I? ALRIGHT, THE JIG IS UP, WHO TOOK DRIVERMAKERS HANDLE OVER?

I didn't recommend it...I just told him to buy one. (I love it when guys buy one and then hate it, then I can say "told you so" :p )

What about the 314 then, the tip is 12.75mm so it won't be a big adjustment.

This is not an issue about lessons, my stroke is about where I need it, it is the lack of action I have when playing my home table (very slow cloth, so more than 2 feet of draw is hard to come by).

I want more spin on the cue ball and slightly less deflection. It is a pain aiming a whole ball away from the a target that is 4 feet in front of me to compensate for deflection.

Is the 314 durable?

Anyone try the 314 legends packages at seyberts? They come with a moori tip, are they a good investment?

Thanks!

anyone can benefit from lessons. it sounds like you are unwilling to learn about the fundamentals of the game and are looking for equipment to fix the problem.

No, I am willing, that is not the current problem, I STILL HAVE A CUE WITH SCREW IN TIPS THAT I BOUGHT FOR $5. I want to invest the best technology available and then continue to work on my game.

I am fairly accurate compensating for deflection, in fact I make nearly all reasonable sidespin shots, I need a cue that will devilver a little more spin and the less delfection might be an added bonus.

The standard Joss shaft with a 13.25 mm tip might no provide the english I require.

I think you're getting wise in your old age. Although that won't stop many others from saying they'd MUCH RATHER have a $200 sneaky pete from some no-name hack because he has "custom cuemaker" on his business card instead of a $1,300 "production" POS Schon or a gorgeous "production" Joss made by a HOF cuemaker.

Who said I'm old?? Other than my wifes friends who like to mention we better have kids now...

And I personally would take the 200 sneaky over any 1300 dollar cue...but I'm a plain jane cue guy.....If schon made a 200 dollar sneaky I'd own one (have had one of their steel jointed sneaky's...nice hitting cue)

..........looking forward to my madison bob cue................

Well I've had a couple of those 13.25 shafts and never had a problem getting all the english I wanted. I just don't like how the thicker shaft feels, and would order a 13 if it was me. If I had a 13.25 I'd get someone to take it down a bit. Right now I have a 13 in my case for a joss, though I don't have a butt it will fit on. I'm keeping the shaft because it hits nice, and sooner or later I'll buy another joss or schon that the shaft will fit on.

you should be able to get all the spin you need with the joss shaft(13.25mm). you might wanna consider lessons if you are having trouble getting english. there might be a problem with your stroke. you dont need a thinner shaft or softer tip to get spin. its like a quick fix. it makes it okay for awhile but the problem is still there.

SPARTAN,
I can draw it back over 9 feet at the pool hall, but I usually play at home with a poor clothed 7 foot table I purchased for $150 from Sports Authority, therefore I can only draw it back 2 feet, which isn't great when I need good position for my next shot. I think it silly to buy a 200 dollar pool cue that will do the same damn thing that my cheapo can do.

Thank you for the suggestions though, and keep them coming
