Any tips on chucking up a jump butt on a 12x36 metal lathe. I recently got the lathe put a rear chuck on it but the distance between the two is about 24 inches. I would like to do the joint work on my big lathe. the butt is 12 inches and 6 inches apart and 18 together any ideas for chucking? Thanks

Face the back of it between centers, then use a piece of threaded rod to connect it to another faced and threaded piece. I usually do 5/16th-18 and then use an old shaft for the extension piece. The threads generally end up bored out to at least 5/16ths so the threads are just temporary.
