Jump cue butt design

Couldn't find out with a reasonable search through previous threads, but I was wondering what the outwards tapering towards the end of jump cue butts was for. It seems a lot of cues, both cheap and custom, have a cap-like protrusion, but I can't figure out what its purpose is. Production cues like OB, Mezz, and Predator don't have it on theirs, which makes me think it's either for some sizing purpose in a case, or for looks.

The one I made I did it so I could place my hand on the very end, like a little ball that my hand cupped. I'm short so I made mine with a shorter shaft, Also did a 14.5 MM shafts.
This was why I did it, not sure if that's the reason for everyone else doing it.

The original purpose for the large "knob" on the back of the jump cue handles was to prevent that portion from dropping down into a cue case.
