any opinions out there on the preferred shape for a jump cue tip?

leather vs. phenolic?

thanks

hmmm

I was wondering about this myself.I just got a new leather tip on my JBC and its very tall with a very rounded dome.I plan on cutting it down and flattening it some but I don't know how much to flatten it.

As for phenolic tips they are better then leather since they are harder but they are prohibited in some leagues and rooms. It is said phenolic tips can damage the CB since they are the same material as the CB.

Thanks...

i have separate break & jump cues. I have the Samsara break tip on my break cue & I leave it tall so it gets the compression / rebound effect during the break. Love the tip & action.

The jump cue has the phenolic tip & is somewhat flat. On another jump cue I shaped the phenolic to a dime radius so i got maximum "tip on ball" but I am wondering what other folks do

Tip Shape J/B

We have a shape of a dime, nickel and flat
Jump cue should be bet. nickel and flat......and low
One of the best tips are black water buffalo

Just my 2 cents

Varies by person as far as shape.
Quarter is between nickle and flat and does work fine.
Phenolic works better than leather but does major damage to balls over time.
Very hard leather works just fine.
If you go from using a phenolic to using leather you might want to use a lower tip height for a little added hardness.

Yes . . . between nickel and flat. Very similar to a break cue . . . you are not trying to impart spin as much as surface area contact/friction with the cue ball.

A White Diamond, Samsara or phenolic tip are best for jumping. You can also use a TipPik to rough them up so that they hold chalk (the "frictionizer") better.

are you all referring to a dedicated jump cue or a combination jump break? I prefer leather on my break cue, just curious about the jump cue

Basically same same. I would use quarter shaped hard leather on jump myself but if I used a jump/break I'd go with nickle shaped leather.

I have a couple of J/B cues and as far as shape, I keep each of them somewhere between a nickle and flat. That way, I get the most tip on the ball.... less squirt because those super hard tips don't really grip the ball.

As for type of tips... I prefer something really hard like phenalic. But, the best I have is a super glue impregnated leather tip. The tip was soaked in a super glue solution for a long period of time and then installed on a phelanic ferrul. That thing is a monster. Every bit of energy is transferred to the cue ball.

As it seems to be popular, I also use a quarter shape. Maybe slightly more rounded on my break but close. I like the samsara for breaking. As far as my jump cue, I have some sort of phenolic on it and seems to work well. I've hit quite a few jump cues and found usually whatever the manufacturer puts on it is fine.

I mostly use a fairly flat one for jumping. Can jump from about a chalk widths away without any fear.

On my break/jump that I use for longer jumps as a full cue I have it more of a nickel shape. I can't jump close up with that cue, broke down or not. But for long jumps, where I have a foot to two foot between cue ball and blocking ball it works great. Can get some english on the cue ball, and usually make the ball unless its just a hard cut.
