Jump cues allowed in TAP?

Hey guys,

I am starting up a 9 ball team on Monday nights and was curious about a ruling. We are not sure if the team is going to be APA or TAP because the poolhall is still opening up and trying to get everything ready for the players and want to find out what the concensus is. I currently shoot APA and I know jump cues are not allowed. But I was curious is they were allowed in TAP?

I looked on www.tapleague.com but the rules listed there do not mention jumps in anyway. . Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Yes, one hundred percent positive jumping and all forms of jump cues are accpetable in TAP.

BTW, TAP is real handicapped nine balll; APA uses a scoring system for each ball counting one point, nine ball equils two points. No pushout rule. Handicaps are races, for example a SL4 need 31 points to win, where a SL5 may need 38 points.

I've played for a while APA 9 ball, 8 ball, and TAP 8 ball.

How does TAP handicap for 9-ball?

When I was playing TAP, they only had 8-ball. I'm not sure if they have started any 9-ball leagues in my area, yet.

As you know, TAP scores 8 ball with the following categories:

Completions (balls made)
Misses
Defensive shots
MOB (balls made on break)
LOT (balls left on table @ end of game)
Games won
Games lost
8 on the break
Break and run

9 ball scores the same way except that there are no LOT's (all players are playing same balls). The rules are Texas Express (no 3 foul rule) and the races are full. A 7 playing a 5 in 8 ball is a 5-3 race. In 9 ball, it's a 7-5 race.

We are currently in our 3rd session of 9 ball and I'm hoping it grows like our 8 ball area did. Also, this year's Nationals will have a 9 ball team championship for the first time.

Hope this helped.

Thanks for the info Scott (Skess). Playing league nine ball for game count instead of rack count is gonna be interesting and fun. Cant wait. Hope it turns out to be tap.

Heath,

Another interesting thing we found was that the matches don't take as long even though there is the potential to play more games. By it's nature, 9 ball is a quicker game when you factor in the combo element.

I can't say that I haven't seen the occasional 3-3 match take an excruciating amount of time to finish, but I'd have to say it's the exception and not the rule.

Good Luck getting started and let me know how it turns out. Maybe we'll see you in Louisville in November.

TAP 9-ball is just like 8-ball - each player has to win X normal 9-ball games for the match. The races are a little different, handicap-wise, than 8-ball, if I recall - maybe one more game per? I forget.

Wow, that sounds like a lot of work for the team captain, or who ever keeps score. Who compiles the information? is it done by the team before it's sent in to the league, or is the raw data sent in and the league has staff to compile it? That kind of information if it's kept properly would be a real good indicator on how someone really plays.

You know, you would think that's the case, but TAP skill levels in my area are all over the place. I mean bad, too. APA SL6s shooting as TAP SL4s and SL3s even in one case, TAP SL4s who are a threat to runout just about every rack on a bar table, ect.

APA is up and down, but I have not seen SLs all over the place like TAP.

I am not the first one to point this fact out, either.

I found the same thing with TAP.
I was getting weight from a player in the APA, and giving up weight to the same player in TAP.

Thanks to everyone for the info on the TAP 9-ball.

Oh, BTW, keeping score in TAP is easy, really easy. It's even better given the fact that ONLY ONE SCORE SHEET is being used, and each team takes turns keeping score, so only three people from one team and two from another need to keep score. It's kind of nice, and APA can learn from this.

Slightly OT as I don't really care about jump cues. But I am getting pretty tired of having to break up my teams and boot people because my players get better.

Unfortunately, TAP is all around my area (DC) but not in my area. I don't really care if there's more stacked teams in TAP, I just want to be able to keep playing with the same friends that I've shot with for the last 5 years.

If TAP keeps growing, hopefully the competition will force the APA to respond by raising the limit to 24 or 25. That would be fine, even if they impose a limit that at most 2 6's or 7's can play.
