Jump Shots, do you like them or not?

Take away kicking? The rails were put on the table for a reason ie. to move the cue ball or object ball to the desired position. I understand the argument for advances in technology. Who is to say where it should stop. Technology has ruined the game of golf. 350 yard drives are the norm. Ridiculous. Courses have gotten ridiculously long because of technology yet these same guys that hit those long drives can't hit the ball acurately with clubs that good old Bobby Jones used. They have tried and can't do it.

Have you seen a set of old woodies used by any of the Pros of today? Please ask anyone of them to take them up and use them exclusively at their next major tournament. Let me know what kind of response you get from them.

FYI: It is possible to play a complete game of straight pool without the cue ball touching a rail. (not competitive, demo only). In fact, I challenge you to try. Take a full rack, break them up and never let the rock touch a rail while still pocketing every ball.

AZB: Has anyone else tried this and succeeded? I've come very close myself from time to time.

I've heard that Mike Sigel used to challenge people to playing a game where the rails were considered pockets (as a hustle). Anyone else heard this too?

My argument was to flip the OP's question and replace jumping with kicking. As you might realize, asking the question "Should Kicking be allowed?" sounds just as unsupported as "Should jumping be allowed?"

Again, I PREFER kicking myself, but why should I not be allowed to do a Jump as an option? Why ban the shot option if it is skill based? Should we not allow Masse/Safety? I've heard similar arguments from people who just dont like safety play. "You're a Jap player!" , ever hear that comment before in a bar/poolhall? They are usually the ones also not in support of safety play because "it takes away from the game" One should ALWAYS try to pocket their ball with full intent of making it. No 2-way shots. I'm sure you've run into those people before, right? I'm sure the Pros play that way too!

This is just in my humble opinion. Please don't take me the wrong way.

I started playing pool when I was 13 and now I'm 25. I don't play in any leagues etc because I travel a lot but I would rank myself as an A player.

So here's the deal, I don't like jump shots and I don't use them. I wonder how you guys think about this?

Also, this has nothing to do with not being able to make jump shots or not willing to learn, I can jump.

Things I don't like about jump shots:

- They are noisy and break the cloth (if performed by someone who's not good at it), balls jump out of the table etc.

- People jump for any reason, even for simple shots, they go and get their jump cue, it makes them lazy and they often overlook better solutions because jumping is simpler.

- I find it super annoying if you are playing in a pool hall and there's someone practicing jump shots.

I just want to know what you guys think. Thanks:)

Jump shots and jump cues are not the same. I totally agree about jump cues being overused, but the jump shot as a shot is fine. You could say the same negatives about the break shot, it's loud, can be annoying when practiced and balls fly off the table if you are not good at it.
