Jumping with a 314-2

Lately I have been playing with a cheap china made sneaky pete. This cue has a fairly hard tip as opposed to the morri soft and mediums I usually use. Due to the hard tip I have been able to leave the jump cue in the case and use my playing cue. I have been wanting to get a predator 314-2 and was thinking about using it on the sneaky. I just wanted to know how this shaft will work for jumping. Its really nice using one cue to break, play and jump with.

If U put a white diamond tip on it should work.

Bk2 also uses 314-2 shaft but i think with slightly thicker taper

I have a pretty hard pressed elk master tip on my 314, I can't jump with it at all. It's an extra inch long though, I don't know if that would make a difference. I can jump with my old shaft, which is a 314, but has a different ferrule, an Aegeis 3 or something.

I was led to believe that the white diamonds where specifically for breaking and jumping. I would like to use this as a playing cue as well. I just wanted to find out if anyone has any issues jumping using a 314 shaft.

In that case u will have to try the harder tips like moori(Q)
But i have never tried such a combination.
Good luck with your quest

I think most folks would agree that the 314-2's are not easy to jump with compared to solid maple shafts. I haven't seen anyone do it yet, although there may be some out there that can.

The other problem is that they may not hold up to the beating well. The ferrules on the 314-2's don't exactly have a great reputation for being tough.

Good luck! :D

I use a 314-2 shaft with a Triangle tip and it jumps very well for half ball jumps and long jumps . When the blocking ball is very close ( 8 inches or less ) or a full ball jump I go for my jump cue .

Hope this helps .

generally high deflection shafts like predators and ob-1's dont jump well because their very design is to flex away from the cue ball - which is the complete opposite thing of what you want from a jump cue. they ned to be stiff.

of course you can probably achieve some decent-ish jumps with a very hard tip and excellent technique, but nevertheless the shafts aren't ideal.

I cant jump at all with an OB1 . Not even the edge of a ball .

I use my Predator BK2 all the time as a jump cue and is jumps very well I think. The APA won't let me use my jump cue so it doubles as my APA jump cue.

I've never been able to get good jumps with my old Predator 314 shafts or with my newer custom shafts that are like Predators (hollow tips). I can jump a half ball from pretty close and a whole ball from 18 inches or so if I hit the cue ball very low, but that's about it. Forget putting follow on a jump.

I don't know exactly why the hollow tips make such a difference in jumping, but it feels like the cue ball is being trapped between the tip and the table surface (unless you hit very low on the cue ball).

My experience also. Even more difficult with a Z2.

I have a 314-2 with a moori medium.

I can clear about half a ball on long jumps (>2ft) , and maybe a quarter on close ones.

hope this helps.
