Juniors players, gambling and awards

With the Orlando Open coming this August 3 ~ 7, I am contemplating awards for the kids. The Orlando Open will feature an explosive junior event along with Parent/adult and junior event, in addition to three, 9 Ball events for adults. All info here: http://www.mousetyme.com/TheOrlandoOpenEvents.html

The norm for an adult venue is CASH and plenty of it. But with the kids you get into some ethics issues..... I am pondering the awards..

Do we give cash??? Should we give BIG gifts or Gift certificates?

My Junior mailer is not big enough to poll the parents/gardians. So I am asking for your opinion here. Is it ethical to give cash prizes to kids or is it just teaching them to gamble?

Thanks!

i play for cash and im a minor. personally, i dont think giving a cash prize is going against ethics because i feel i have good ethics when it comes to pool.

but if yur really concerned, how about a savings bond? that way, the kid cant get the money for at least a year, and it could go towards a college fund.

I started playing in tournaments at 16-17 for cash (a few hundred), and it was no problem.

I guess it all depends on the age group. I wouldn't give a cash award to kids 15 and below, possibly trophies, gift certificates, pool cues, etc. When I was 16, the top prize was a Schon, which I won, and it meant a lot to me.

Just food for thought.

Nah, don't give em prizes. Cash is the best bet. With cash they can buy a cue, or something they want. The only way i would give out prizes is if it was a prize table with the winner choosing first and second place chooses second and so on. If you give them prizes no matter how good they are somone always gets screwed. For instance you could give away 1 $1000 cue for first, (great prize for me!) only to find out the winner has a perfectly good cue and would prefer something different. You can never go wrong with cash. I don't think kids will learn to gamble this way. Tournament play is nothing like gambling. You pay your $40 (or whatever the entry fee is) to play and compete and have fun, and also have a chance at a big Prize. Your also paying table time and all other tournament fees. Gambling you put $40 against the other guys $40, if you win you get $40. I don't see the parallel other than cash is involved.

I don't think you give cash. I believe that a more appropriate gift would be savings bonds, scholarships, along with a trophy and some parting gifts like tshirts, cues, ect... It just kinda depends on you cash position. Lets say you had about 4000 cash to divy up between 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places...it could look something like this

1st: 1500 US Savings Bond, Trophy, Cue, T-Shirt
2nd: 1000 US Savings Bond, Trophy, Case, T-Shirt
3rd: 500 US Savings Bond, Trophy, Accesory Kit, T-Shirt

instead of savings bonds you could use scholarships. just a thought.

you may also want to divy up the money in combo of a larger savings bond and some cash to cover expenses for the trip for parents. (Those trips can get expensive im sure)

IMO, that in itself is the problem with cash for the kids, in the end the parents get it. I agree that cash is Ok for 16 and up, but a savings bond/prizes would be better for those younger.

Well, I am 14 and I would prefer cash......but if I didn't get cash I would like gift certificates too..but that's me. When is one of these junior tournaments coming to Texas??!!!!????!!!

Heres an idea, just give them jewelery like a nice gold chain or a nice ring that way they got something to show for winning or if they wanna get in action and are bust they can pawn it for a few hundred. :D
