Prior to this year it was tough to find a junior event. There were maybe 2-3-4 junior state championships and a single junior National tournament.
This year after the BEF started sectioning the junior state events we have had one in every New England state, plus a bunch of others all over the country.
There is the new Atlantic Cup event, and CSI is said to be planning their own Junior National tournament the week before the BEF Nationals (which is great but that means for anyone that wants to play in both, you are spending two weeks in Vegas which is very tough to manager for most parents *if anyone wealthy wants to sponsor me and my son so he can play in both, I won't say no though LOL*). I think APA leagues also have a national event for kids although from the info I was given, they are not really supporting junior pool outside of their own event.
SBE junior events always get full also, the event closed to registrations just a day or two after I signed up my son and every other year I looked into it, the event was full.
Rivas at 15 won a 10 ball event, and my son when he was 14 was just one round out of cashing in the NJ State 10 Ball last year.
I was watching April Larson at 14 play like a seasoned pro in the Women's Pro event at SBE, she but a beating on someone about 3 times her age, won by 10 games or so. At 14 she ran out calmly and well on 9 foot diamonds. I had to ask her how old she was since I though she was maybe 16-17 now, but she's only 14. I watched her play her first few years in the BEF Nationals and she has improved a huge amount. Will be the next top American Pro for sure.
