I once saw a maple shaft "rifle-drilled" down its entire length and then fitted with a length of steel brakeline for rigidity , with the steel line projecting from the maple and serving as tenon , with a ferrule then cemented onto the line.
Hardest part about this is finding someone with the equipment to rifle-drill a 30" shaft .
Guy that had it worked at a company called Advanced Ordinance , where they manufacture components for the M-16 , so I'm betting the bore diameter was .223 - don't know if the maple had actual rifling in it , or was smooth.
Also don't know if this made an actual improvement in how the cue played , cuz the guy that had it didn't really play that well - with that cue or any other !
