Justis, or Whitten Case Owners

Well my search for a new Case has come down to a Jack Justis, or Dan Whitten. Still not sue if it will be 3 x 6, or only 2 x 4 . But it will be a Two pocket Model. But I got a question for Owners, or Previous Owner of those brands of Cases.

If you could make an improvement in the Case you have, or have had what would it be. Also what is you biggest dislike about your Justis, or Whitten Case.

Leaning toward the Whitten, as the Justis is about 30% higher in price. But I am still open to ideas, and willing to save a few more months for a better, or user friendly Case.

Given the choice of the two, and given I have owned a Whitten, I would lean toward the Justis. Simple reason, it's lighter.

Whitten is better for storing cues IMO, because of the weight and the perfect elegance of a case, if you are just storing a cue then the case shouldn't be moved around a lot...but it's just not an everyday case like a Justis is.

Shipping Tubes, and Baby Flannel are my storage method for extra Cues. I wrap the Cue in Baby Flannel, and than put the Cue in the Shipping Tube. I stand them in the back of my cloths closet, and the system work well.

I am looking for a Case for everyday useage.:) 2 x 4, or 3 x 6, Justis, or Whitten.

I am still thinking 2 x 4, or 3 x 6. If I go 3 x 6 I can't imagine it will weight out more than 2.5 more than a 2 x 4 considering the weight of an extra Butt with Two Shafts.

I too am watching that 3 x 6 Whitten on FLEA BAY, as $340.00 is 30% off retail....;)

I don't own either, but I know owners from each case maker. I have heard no complaint from the guy who owns the Justis case, while the guy who owns the Whitten case complaints about the weight constantly. Both case makers have exceptional quality, but I personally would choose Justis.

Cases ....

Out of the 2 listed, The Pro-Lite Justis would be best.
As far as quality and UTILITY too, you should also look
at Jim Murnak's Vintage line. Jim's come with double
shoulder straps. I have found, through trial and error,
that a 3 x 5 case is the right combination of space,
convenience, and weight for me, and good convenient
pocket space and arrangement is a must for me.

Not to sound like a jerk but I think I own or owned every case on the market since 1979. For storage Its George/Fellini/Kelli/Thomas/Engle cases are your best bet due to the air tight seal. For looks there is NOTHING like a JUSTIS. I have had Whitten/InStroke/Jay Flowers case too but for the $$$, Jack is KING!! PM me is you want more info on the air tight stuff...if you wanna Justis PM Jack, he will hook you up!!

Similar thoughts

I decided to buy a Justis. I like the fact that the cases have a sense of individuality. Don't get me wrong- the Whitten cases are great. I have a 1/2 that is really nice and if I need another case I would not hestitate to buy a Whitten. One reason I bought a Justis recently was timing.

The new multifunction cases are of the same footprint as his 3x6 but you can get it in different configurations. I chose 4x8. He posted earlier about the configurations- I think you can also have it in a 5/6 and maybe a 3/8 or something like that. Check that post from Jack to see which ones are correct.

The next timing issue was price. I think that Jack is raising his prices in January. I do not know how much but I wanted to order my case before the price increase. It may be a small increase- but an increase to me is all the same. It might have been the difference between having one and not having one.

What I don't like about the Whitten cases are the pockets. On the older ones the pockets look really crushed up. Designwise both are great cases. I think the Justis cases will age better.

Last, I kind of looked at both cases as if they were cuemakers. Both are going to have limited production runs and both will probably be coveted when the cases are no longer available. I wanted a case that would be personalized a great deal and I have always wanted a Justis after seeing Buddy Hall and other pros carrying them around.

Nothing personal

but a loaded 4 x 8 is heavy. I had a Proper vinyl 4 x 8,
and loaded with 2 playing cues, a break cue, and a jump
cue and accessories for 10 days in Vegas, it was heavy.
The shoulder strap was neither wide enough nor padded
like it should be. I ended up buying a 'seat belt' pad at
Autozone for $4-6 and put it on the shoulder strap to
be easier on my shoulder.

I can't understand that how anyone could be interested in ordering a new state of the art case, and that new case maker James Murnak's name is a must towards the top of the list.

Between his work ethic, SUPERIOR workmanship and the abilitiy to create anything from minor to major custom work astounds me.

I own the nicest case James he has ever built. I own many other cases by other famous makers. They are clearly superior products , but not the pinnacle, in my opinion.

I have a Justis, and love it. He sat down with me for a long time to work out exactly what I wanted. I got the medium brown leather which is just beautiful, and is already aging well. The only thing I would like to add is a shoulder strap, can get a bit bulky caring it around for long periods of time. Definately go with a Justis.

That is a good point

A loaded 4/8 is heavy. I don't usually carry to capacity and I usually am not toting long distance.

In re Murnak- I agree that everything that I have seen appears to be great. I thought the original poster had narrowed to Justis and Whitten. I was really regretting not buying one of the AZ specials on the Vintage. He pmed me but my inbox was full.

Reguarding the Murnak Case, I see that Latch/Closure SNAP as a potential long term problem.

From the reviews of people with the actual case they have said they "don't" see the latch/closure SNAP as a potential long term problem. The below thread shows more artistic cases then I have seen come from either Whitten or Justis, ever.

http://www.azbilliards.com/vbulletin/upload/showthread.php?t=21932

After seeing the most recent custom work of Murnak on the above thread I put Murnak at the top of the looks department. I have never seen Whitten or Justis come close to that level of detail, actually I see both companies putting out cases that are almost clones with different color schemes. Take for example the new Reyes, Bustamente, and Buddy Hall Justis cases, they are not nearly distinct entities. They are differentiated by their pocket design and names alone.

The only custom cue case maker that can match what I have seen from Murnak in the pure art and unique design of his cases is Chas Clements, and he lacks in the function department. For pure form AND function Murnak is king.
