Why is it that several of the greatest players who ever lived decided to move to Kentucky and reside there for at least a good while? Nick Varner, Buddy Hall, Keith McKready, Shannon Daulton, Earl Strickland, and several other players have all resided in Kentucky in the past. I just find it strange that argueably 3 of the greatest players of decades past have lived here. Did Varner draw others to the area? Or is there a different reason? I would love to hear any ideas you may have. I would also like hear any opinions of who you think are currently Kentucky's best players.

Most are Natives

First of all, Buddy Hall actually was born and has lived in Metropolis, Illinois all his life, but he has been mistakenly been said to be from Paduach, Kentucky in many magazines. The neat thing is Metropolis and Paduach are just miles apart and seperated by a bridge, and the reason Buddy was know to be from Paduach, was that town had the only decent pool rooms.
Second, Nick Varner, Shannon Daulton, and John Brumback all were born in Kentucky and continued to live there thru out their careers (Nick and Shannon have both moved the last I have heard).
In the case of Earl Strickland and Keith McCready, they both moved to Richmond to be backed by room owner Monroe Brock of the Maverick club.

The action in Kentucky is not so good now days, but twenty years ago it sounds that the western part of the state was a good place to be a pool player. Maybe it is the beauty of the blue grass and the laid back attitude of most residence of Kentucky.
