Kevin Carson Cue

A banger at best...

I have a problem and I would appreciate you guys/gals input...

I purchased a Kevin Carson cue from Kevin Carson on here. I got a nice deal on it, 240 dollars. It has four bocote points, with two vaneers on each point. It has a leather wrap. Bocote butt as well with a thin silver ring at D E. The problem is this, the cue has TOO big of a butt for me to get my small hands around it. I mean this cue is THICK...way too THICK for me. I have written Kevin, trying to get a response from him...I want to send the cue back and get my money back. I have never chalked it or hit a ball with it at all. I can not use this cue. I have tried selling it, but no one is interested in the cue currently. He was on vacation, and so I waited patiently for a week for him to respond to my email just wanting to talk to him. He responded and I explained then that I wanted to return the cue, unplayed condition as I said. I have received no response from him going on another 4 days now.

What should I do? How should I feel in this situation?

To be perfectly honest, I was not pleased with the cue from the beginning. His vaneer work is flawed and his points are not very even...but for the money, it was a good value. I mean I am not trying to rob him or anything, and I believe 240 was a very fair price. He did an excellent job on the leather wrap, which to me is worth 100 alone. I would gladly use the cue if I could simply get my hands around it. I showed it to someone else yesterday in person, and they said they would have a hard time with it being so thick, and they are 5'11".

Any ideas?

if the guy has any integrity at all he'll take it back in a heartbeat.

i don't think anyone can expect someone to buy a cue from them over the internet, and not let them test the cue for a couple days. if the buyer for some reason isn't happy with it, as long as its returned in mint condition, they should get their money back.......less the handling fees.

unchalked and unplayed with.........he should gladly refund your money.......less the shipping fees.

thanks

cue ...

Shorty ... If he is a fair person, he should give you your money back less
handling fees and maybe $50 for his time, but that is it.

I am only 5'7", and some of the butts seem big to me too. That's why on
my $1100 Shurtz custom cue (which was one of 6 featured on the cover of
Cueist Magazine in Jan. 2002) has a 'Slimline' butt.

Bob Owen, partner and cuemaker for Shurtz, makes both a slimline and a normal butt for cues. My break stick, a Sneakie with SS joint, is regular size, but my playing cue is a slimline butt.

Shurtz's are pretty popular throughout Tornado alley, and a main sponsor of the Midwest 9 ball tour. If you want to check it out:

www.Shurtzcue.com or (316) 260-3844 and ask for Bob Owen, Gabe's dad, Gabe is the 2004 US Open Champion. They are in Wichita, Ks.

I am not trying to bad mouth Kevin or his cue really...I just wanted to know if it was unreasonable to think of returning the cue and expecting a refund.

Thanks,
Shorty

I don't think it is unreasonable. Was this an ebay purchase? If it was you should take a hit for all the shipping and ebay fees. I think, in the future you should clarify that a slim butt is required in the negotiation phase. ;) Good luck, in your search, for that perfect cue.

Shorty, not a nag but it'd be important if you ask if the handle is thin or thick next time.
Ask if the cue has dual taper or single taper. On dual taper cues, the forearm can have a steep taper ( like 16 thou per inch ) then the handle can have a straighter taper ( around 12 thou per inch or less ) and if the bottom of the cue is around 1.250" or less.
With your small hands 1.250" would be fat. Maybe 1.200" would be nice ( with a not so steep taper ). On single taper cues, the taper from the joint to the bottom is one angle, about 14 thou per inch or so.
I'd get a caliper and caliper the specs of your favorite cue and don't order any more cues that are way different than that.

Thanks Joey, and next time I will. I have since bought a Gilbert jump/break and it is just fine. I have never felt a cue that is as thick as this one. I just bought the cue based on the pictures the guy posted here on AZ. I had wanted it a little thick as I planned to make it a jump/break cue...but not this thick. And as I said, I did not chalk it nor hit a ball with it...I would just like to send it back and call it a wash...am I asking too much?

If you pay for the shipping and his shipping cost and the cue is pretty much the same since you got it, I think you're within reason.
I wouldn't want unhappy customers either.
I was trained in sales the 7-11 rule eons ago. A happy customer tells 7 of his friends and families about his/her good experience. An unhappy customer tells 11 of his friends and families of his/her good experience. It's best to take care of the customers.

I will pay for any and all of the shipping...I just want it worked out somehow at this point and the guy won't communicate with me online for some reason.

So I guess what you're saying is, the next time someone comes on here wanting to know what's the best "production" cue for "x" number of dollars...you won't be recommending this little known inexpensive "custom?" cue maker for one of his works of art instead,....correct? Next time...buy production. Schon is thin.

Good thing you didn't have 17 grand ripped off like LilJohn....woooooeeeeee....

Ahh drivermaker, please note I shoot with a Schon. I was not looking for a new shooting cue, I was looking for a break cue. I would gladly recommend this person for someone else, just not for someone with tiny hands like mine. I now have a Gilbert jump/break as I said and I am very pleased with the size and feel of it...just looking to communicate with this guy and get him his cue back is all. I just have never found a cue that was too thick for my hands, for I do have large hands for a guy only 32 inches tall...but not THAT large. Thank you for your input however.

Yes, I thought I did...and no, I don't have your phone number cause I deleted that email...matter of fact I don't even have your address anymore. Could you please email it to me at kidshark@yahoo.com?

Thank you Kevin!

Okay...my patience is starting to get thin...

I returned the cue to Kevin and talked to him on the phone. He said the cue was fine and was in new condition like he sent it to me. He seemed really nice and he agreed to refund me my money. He sent me an email last Tuesday saying that he had to wait for a check to clear his account he had deposited the previous week, of which I assume it cleared one of the four days last week and he would be mailing me a check. I have sent him two emails since then, asking for a status, not being rude or anything in either email...just honestly curious as to how things were going and received no response.

Now here I am, it's June 7th...no cue...no money...and feeling a bit on the short end of the stick...pun intended.

Yes, I know drivermaker it's my own damn fault...*I can tell what he is gonna type before he even types it*

240 dollar lesson...and I am not going anywhere

I tried calling Kevin again...no answer. I tried emailing him...no response. The only response I received was he was waiting on a check to clear, and that was a couple of weeks ago now.

Lesson learned here,

Sorry 'bout that Chad. I hope he gives you what's due to you.
I learned a lesson here too.
Not quite as expensive as yours though.
I don't deal with new people here anymore as a precaution.
I'm sorry to say that but a few deals with new people here have gone awry too many times.

And a lesson to everyone else straight from Drivermaker on this subject of guys with "custom cuemaker" imprinted on their business cards working part-time or as hobbyists outta their garage or basement...."I told you so........"
(sorry for your misfortune Shorty....just refer back to the above quote for future purchases)

Anyone locate this guy?

I am looking for a Kevin Carson...he lives in Canton, Ohio somewhere but I can't trace the address out of my Paypal like I thought. He still owes me 240 bucks and I want someone to please go knock on his door...just to see if he is alive or what...

I would consider it a belated birthday gift if you would please!

Thanks,
Shorty

Shorty,

Sorry to hear. Check this link out and hopefully it helps somewhat. Appears he doesn't care much about being contacted because there is no phone number. Looks like you're not the only one.
