Kick at this!

I like useing the Dr. Cue diamond system on this shot. If you hit it good you can make the ball and play shape all at one time. If you kit it bad you can come up safe on the short rail. Yhis is the first time i used this table so bare with me i will get better.

Sorry i placed the balls wrong before. This Dr. Cue system works greate if you take the time to use it. I have won a lot of games useing it.

Wow, I look at this and see the one-rail kick (as Andrew Manning suggests) to be the obvious best shot. Though the 2-railer gives you a much "bigger ball" to hit the 9, the chances of selling out a shot on the 8 down the rail seem higher; you could also end up sending the cue ball above the 8 (bumping the 9 out of it's way) with the 2-rail option.

I would kick directly at the 9, favoring the lower portion of the 9, at about 3 rail speed. If you do anything except double kiss the 9ball, your cue ball will go back across the table, leaving your opponent a bank at best. If you can't hit the 9-ball at least 9 out of 10 times, you need some kicking lessons from Jerry B. (if you'd been at DCC this year the lesson was free).

P.S. - If allowed, I also sort of like the intentional foul of snuggling the 8 against the 9 (if you know your opponent; the crafty opponent will just play a similar safety back at you and you will have a more difficult kick).

P.P.S. - I would like to hear SJM's thoughts on this one (we usually disagree on defensive play, and I find that I'm usually wrong).

Well it's about time someone came out and acknowledged that my suggestion is "the obvious best shot":D

With a shot like this the only thought process I'm going through is "what shots gives the smallest chance that I'll leave my opponent an easy shot to win the game". With the two rail kick to the far corner and back or the masse-safe, I figure I'm at least 80% to give him an easy shot (by which I mean ball in hand), the two rail kick the short way, I figure I'm at least 50% to bump the nine out of the way and give him a straight shot up the rail, but this one-rail kick, I think I'm about 80% to leave him a shot that will make him wince (a very awkward cross-side bank, or an incredibly demanding cut hugging the entire long rail). And as a bonus, I put the 9 in a place where it's very difficult for him to play much of a safe back against me.

Hay i was playing Dee Atkins in Vegas one time and he rooled his last ball up on my 8 and i took the cue ball and put it behind the 8 and shot his ball up the table and allowing me to get ball in hand and winn the match. I guess its like you said you have to know who you are playing. I guess Dee thought i was a nobody and didnt know any better. (LOL)

DOug, I made the same suggestion and liked this best. I feel that from that position, you are a heavy dog to lose. The best safe is to put the cb behind the 9 ball, but it's speed sensitive and hard to execute perfectly. The one rail kick can leave a lot of playable options for your opponent (cut the 8 into the corner, bank the 8 into the side, etc.) and I'm not satisfied leaving him a bank shot on the game ball.

IMO, you have to give yourself a chance to overcome the odds and win. The two rail kick, played to error on the short side of the 9 is the best option, IMO. If you make the 9, you have a chance to run out, be it bank the 8 or whatever. If you miss, the CB goes to the head rail and leaves a bank shot or difficult cut shot. The safety is not a high percentage safe and doesn't give you a chance to win. The "kick to make the 9" gives you a chance to win and if you miss, the same outcome as the 1 rail kick off the 9.

Cuetech-I mentioned before that I liked your soft masse safe the best, if I was shooting a pure safe.

Nit pick?! Dude, whose the one picking on grammatical errors?! Hell, I never claimed to be the sharpest knife in this drawer. Iz jus luckee to be ables to tipe at all.

FWIW, I just ran my sentence thru the ol "MS spellin n grammmer" checker and it said I was okey dokey.

You got me on the "never want to back down" thing. Hell, I live in the land of the "type A" personalities :D

Eric >the confrontational one

Eric-
Perhaps you and I should bury the hatchet and forget this whole ordeal. You see, when I said "Always one to nit-pick and never one to back down", I was referring to myself and NOT you! And of course I nitpick over grammatical and spelling errors! I have a degree in English with a strong focus in literature, AND I work as an editor for a publishing company!

Furthermore, when it comes to MS Word 'Spell and Grammer check', you may find at some point in time that it frequently makes mistakes. Its almost like trying to get direction on Mapquest. Most people will tell you that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. Well, according to Mapquest, its a series of straight lines, unneccessary turns, and 20 minutes of 'out-of-the-way' driving!!! Damn software companies!

Just kidding. Anyway, I was calling myself the nitpicker. Not you. I am a nerd. I know this. But after years of realzing that I am fat, balding, and quite nerdy, I have come to accept that this is simply just a part of who I am. :D

No need. I never had any bones to pick with you, just friendly chat.

We have some common personality traits.

That explains everything! (j/k)

Unfortunately, grammar isn't my strong point and MS Spell check is my "fall back" resource. Good thing I'm not in publishing :p

In summary this is what I have gathered from this thred:

1) Everyone seems to agree that we are chances of victory are slim (75% dog.)

2) One is an aggressive option:

%Hg6Z9%Im8Z8%Pa9Z8%WC9H1%X`9Z6%YF4C9%ZC1F9%[k7Z5%\G3C5%]s2Q1
%^l8[0

3) Three other options are kicks to safe:

START(
%Hh3Z3%Il7Z2%Pe1Y3%Qr2I0%Re3N6%Ug1P5%Vk9[0%Ws3K1%Xn8[4%Ym3X1
%Zi3C5%[i2D4%\e5X8%]n6Z6%^m5X8

%Hg0Z1%Im0Y7%Pa5Z0%Un0X3%Vs5M6%Wm7D4%Xa9Y2%Ys0C8%Zf0[3%]s1L8
%^n4C4
)END

4) Then of course the masse to safe:

START(
%Am1Z2%BL8P7%CJ7O4%DL8N2%EM7P1%FK7P1%GK7N8%Hh5Z5%I L7O1%JK8M6

%ae2Z0
)END

First of all I must say these are all great options, and I really appreciate the input guys. I guess it all comes down to what you are comfortable with.

You know what I mean. When your thinking upon your options you say to yourself what can go right and what can go wrong. Based upon your knowledge of your own game you obviously go for the shot that gives you the higher % of success.

Like I said before I shot this shot twice and I was successful both times. I was comfortable with this shot. For me the masse and the aggresive two rail kick would probably be my last options. The comfort level for me isn't as high on these shots probably because of consistancy with those shots. Could I do them? Of course.

Also guys rolling the 8-ball up to the 9-ball is a foul but a viable option. I don't like it as much because as one poster commented against Dee Adkins if it doesnt lay right in the end it can be quickly over giving your opponent ball in hand and the many options associated with that.

Again thanks guys!!! Nobody's wrong in their opinion here. But the comments from the bystander at the time made my jaw drop. 9Basically saying I made a wrong decision after I made two sucessful kicks to win the game.
