This shot happened in an 8-ball tourney on Friday night. I called the side pocket - made the two ball then had to try and cross-side the 8 ball and ended up kissing it off the bottom rail. What English should I hit to avoid kissing the 8 ball? I hit just above center but I think I need to hit low left. Any help would be appreciated.

I would suggest hitting plain bottom, and hitting it a little closer to the second diamond with a little more strength. The draw and the strength will cause the angle to narrow down after the 8 ball hit off the cusion. That way, you hit a fuller 8 ball, allowing the cueball to drawback without touching the bottom rail, and avoiding the 8 ball.

Just my 2 cents.

As with most shots, the exact layout of the balls is key, but usually on crossing shots like this, I avoid the kiss using high, inside english. You have to shorten the angle slightly to still make the shot, but this also helps to avoid the kiss.

It seems from this angle that you could do a hard reverse english to bank it rather than cross-over bank. Otherwise, you can do a cross-over with a reverse english so that the cue ball can hit the rail and stiffen up to get out of the cue ball's path. I don't think you want to do left english as it will impel the cue ball toward the object balls' path. It's really something you have to experiment with first starting with whether you can do cross-over bank with no english and see what happens then apply the correct english accordingly, most likely reverse if any. IMHO for what it's worth :p

I forgot to mention that I usually find the draw to be a bad play here because it will bring the path of the cue ball to follow more closely with the path of the banked ball. (Given more opportunity for them to kiss.) But again, the exact layout is key...

I is hard to tell from the table. (Having to cock my head to the right) But I believe that that low english with a good crisp stroke would get the CB out of the way. It also would put follow on the 8 to help close the angle.

Looking at the diagram again - the cue ball was more towards the center of the table leaving the only possible shot - the cross-side bank. I have not had time yet. But will experiment at ways to avoid the kiss with the suggestions provided.

Thanks guys-

I agree, also you can't hit it hard you gotta let it die in the pocket.
