According to the official website of the WPC, www.worldpoolchampionships.com, Danny will be taking the place of John Schmidt. Here's an excerpt:

In Group 8, John Schmidt was unable to obtain a passport in time and is replaced by road warrior Dan ‘Kid Delicious’ Basavich and Shawn Putnam has withdrawn from Group 1 to be replaced by Timothy Hall.

Putnam gave a reluctance to undertake a lengthy plane journey as a reason.

I'd just like to say, hit 'em good, Danny!

Danny is a great player and subject to win any tournament he enters. Good luck to him. Sam

Speaking of the WPC, Tony Crosby played in the monthly 9-ball tournament at Planet 9-Ball yesterday and was hitting them pretty sporty. He came in a very close second to local straight shooter Trevor Braymore. Tony had a call from Britains Daryl Peach asking if he'd like to share a room while at the WPC. Tony said,"sure, what are the odds that we'll have to play each other, with all the players entered into this tournament ?" Well, I don't know what the odds are (I mean, WERE), but they are in the same flight of four or five players and do indeed have to play each other.. Oy-Vey !

Wouldn't surprise me if the fans take to Kid Delicious in the same way they took to the colorful Alain Martel, who came third in 2001.

Big guys who smile a lot and get excited tend to be fan favorites.

Are those the odds for the people to come out of the groups? If so
is there a catch? It seems pretty easy to pick a couple out of each group that would make it.
I like the odds for a few of the guys to win it. Earl is 20/1 and Parica
is 50/1.
I think its good odds on Charlie but I dont think he can win it. At 40/1 that
would be a good win. I am sure last years champ had to have big odds.

Smorgass Bored,

Your man may not even get out of the groups? As far as I know the groups are not complete yet as there should be 8 players in each group, Still people to qualify. This group is tough as it is. A race to five alternate break. Your man better not miss. Right now your man is 225 to 1 to win outright at Stan James The Bet.

I will stick with my friend Charlie Williams at 40 t0 1 right now to get out of his group even with Mika in it.

There are 128 players in the main draw.
For the first round, the players are divided in to 16 groups of eight and play each other once over a race to five with alternate breaks (July 10-13).

At the conclusion of the group section, the top four players from each group move forward into the last 64 and the bottom four players are eliminated.

Group 4 odds
Yang, Ching Shun 4/5
Van Corteza, Lee 9/4
Lohtander, Marko 11/1
Crosby, Tony 11/1
Schmidt, Michael 11/1
Peach, Daryl 11/1
Espinola, Gustavo 66/1

Group 6 odds
Immonen, Mika 11/10
Williams, Charlie 11/4
Kang, C-C 9/2
Thorburn, Cliff 14/1
Reimering, Christian 14/1
Valentine, Michael 14/1
Kay, James 14/1
Reira, Emile 50/1

GROUP 4
Ching-Shun Yang Chinese Taipei
Marko Lohtander Finland
Tony Crosby USA
Lee Van Corteza Philippines
Michael Schmidt Germany
Daryl Peach England
Gustavo Espinoza Argentina
Taipei Qualifier 10

GROUP 6
Mika Immonen Finland
Charlie Williams USA *
Cliff Thorburn Canada
Chin-Ching Kang Chinese Taipei
Anthony Ginn England
Michael Valentine Scotland
Emile Reira Australia
James Kay England

I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it for the whole week this year, but I will probably try to come up for the weekend. Check your PMs.

************** NEWS FLASH **************
My information was wrong. Tony Crosby came from the left side of the board and defeated Trevor Braymore twice to WIN the monthly 9-ball tournament. Sorry,Tony....

No the group odds are to win the group-one player only.

The 40-1 on Charlie, 50-1 on Parica are the odds for them to win the whole thing. Last year Hohman was 1000-1 with one bookie outfit and i no someone who had him too.

Tony is a great player and as nice a guy as can be.

Last month though Ga Young Kim (female) beat him twice to win an Open tournament (in Orlando i think). She wants to try to qualify for the WPC but from what i hear, she wont be allowed to because she doesnt have a penis.

She doesn't have a penis but she has more game than Alvarez and Lillis put together.

If Ga Young Kim is ineligible, that's unfortunate. There is some precedent on which to draw here. In the early 1980's, Jean Balukas was allowed to play in the men's qualifiers for the World Open 14.1 Championships. She qualified and played in the men's draw, though with only marginal success.

Though some of my fellow old-timers will recollect that Jean's participation in those qualifiers was somewhat controversial at the time, most who objected did so on the basis that Jean should not be permitted to participate in both the men's and women's events, which were played simultaneously, citing potential scheduling problems as their reason.

Though there is little question that at least some of the entrants in this year's WPC play at a lower level than Ga Young Kim, I suspect she'd be in way over her head if she were to play in the WPC.

Nonetheless, she's a fine player, and should be permitted to partcipate in the WPC if she's good enough to win a qualifier.

Ga Young would definitely have a tough time in the WPC but as someone else pointed out Steve Lilis and Frank Alvarez are going to have a tougher time and they are in the middle third of the field. Last time i looked, over thirty players had odds of 400-1 or higher, Alvarez's odds.

Stan James would have GYK rated better than that. Im not saying invite GYK but i do say invite Allison,Karen and Shin Mei Liu and let GYK enter the qualifiers.

...Just like sending JimmyM and RudeDog to the US Open. What a waste of time and money. They don't have a chance to win!!!!! I am sending my $25 to cancer research.

Please, don't bet your money on someone who has no chance to win. It is no fun at all.

I bet if someone wanted to chip in and send Kelly Fisher to a WPBA tournament you would be all for it, even though she has "no chance to win" as you put it.

Why do you even care what people do with their own money?
