Kielwood Cue Shaft - Possibly F/S

Last October, I purchased my first KW cue shaft. It was made by Cory Barnhart and is a radial joint, 29.5”, 12.85mm, short ferrule and 3.81ozs. The tip is Cory’s and I fell in love with how it plays. So much so I embarked on trying to find a little heavier Kielwood shaft weighing at least 4 ozs. The catch is I want the shaft to be uncored, just wood and and without any weight insert added by the builder. Well, that turned into a long search but eventually a few cue makers came forth contacting me that they can build a KW shaft the way I want it to be.

Last week I received two beautiful flat faced wood KW shafts weighing 4.0 ozs and 4.15 ozs. The shafts play fantastic and now that I have a cue maker that can build what I want, well, that’s exactly what I now want. SSDiver2112 just built a gorgeous KW shaft that fulfills my requirements so he’s someone I’d consider in addition to the cue builder that recently built my last two KW shafts. So before I bother to post my Barnhart KW shaft for sale so I can order another slightly heavier version, I figured I’d ask to see if there’s any interest or questions.

The ironic part is the Barnhart KW shaft meets my min. weight requirement but I’d prefer it was a 1/4 oz. heavier. Nonetheless, if I kept it, I’ve got zero complaints because it plays great which is why I added two more KW shafts. I just would like all my KW shafts to weigh four ounces so I’m now wondering if I should sell it so I can order another 4 oz. KW shaft. So although this isn’t a for sale listing, it is more of a for sale feeler. If I never sell the Barnhart KW shaft, I’d remain very pleased because it plays great but I just prefer it be a wee bit heavier.

So this thread can discuss my reasons why I want a heavier shaft, appeal of Kielwood or ferret out possible interested buyers. Now that I successfully located cue makers that can build what I want whereas many other builders declined, I’d like all my KW shafts to be 4 oz min. This way the weight of my orig. maple shafts won’t change by using Kielwood.

I realize 3.81 is really close but look at it this way. I am not being picayune but rather giving another player a chance to discover Kielwood shafts do play better and make a difference. Cory’s KW shaft was my initial introduction to Kielwood and I’m thinking about passing it along, however, if I kept it, I’d still be very happy. It is the reason why I fell in love with Kielwood shafts but only as long as the weight isn’t too light.

p.s. I changed the tip on the Barnhart KW to match my other cues……Kamui Black Clear Soft & Shaft Condition is A+.

What is pin? does it have cory's ringwork?. are you going to add pics and place it in f/s section?

The most important smallest word in the world is what started your post…..”IF”…..and so when I decide, I will act.

However, at the moment, I’m enjoy playing with that shaft and there aren’t many of Cory’s RMS shafts available and
he only makes radial pin shafts so he has a much smaller audience. If you did want one, you can’t go to Pool Dawg.

I was very perseverant in my effort to have some Kielwood shafts made to my specs that so many others told me
couldn’t be done which included noteworthy cue makers I contacted asking them to build two Kielwood shafts.

Well, I strongly disagreed because that made no sense whatsoever and embarked on trying to locate cue makers that
can build what I want that didn’t have to be longer than 29” just for the sake of weight, uncored, and no weight inserts.

If I never was successful, I’m still delighted with Cory’s RMS shaft weighing 3.81 ozs. but it wasn’t the outcome. I was
right and I did locate talented cue makers that were already doing what some other cue makers told me they couldn’t.

So my post was intended to discuss any aspect of my search efforts, why I wanted to match my original maple shaft
specs, why I oppose adding weight, answer questions or comments like yours or maybe even pass the shaft along.

Naturally, if I did sell it, I’d replace it with a heavier KW shaft from Jim since he’s built two for me. But in the back of
my mind, I’m thinking of maybe asking SCDiver 2112 to undertake a curly wood KW shaft instead. He does a nice job.

Since this thread has generated little interest, thanks for posting and giving me a reason to elaborate. I was intending
to just let it fade to the back pages and disappear for lack of interest either in the thread topic or because of the author.

Cory, for own reasons, only builds radial pin cues and shafts. He will not build using a different pin, only radial.
I am not acquainted with what Cory’s typical ring work is since I haven’t closely examined many of his cues.

Here’s a photo I just took of my Barnhart roasted maple shaft (RMS) shaft collar in daylight. Cory cannot use
the Kielwood trademark name but roasted maple is a equivalent synonym for torrefication which is Kielwood.

That is his standard ring pattern. Do you know if it's his standard jont diamater of ~0.842?

Those shafts seem to sell fast on other sites, so if priced reasonably I think you'll be able to sell fairly quickly.

You might want to put this in the "possibly for-sale" section.
👍
I’m actually very pleased with 3.81 ozs. (12.85mm) so I’ve got no great urge to sell the shaft. I just put my favorite tip
on it (Kamui Black Clear soft). Since getting the new shafts, both are a wee bit thinner (12.75 & 12.6mm) and the same taper.

As I play more with my other cues that requires using one of the new KW shafts, I’m enjoying playing with the smaller diameter shafts. So that could be a factor in deciding to sell the shaft. So far, 12.6mm seems to be the best feeling KW shaft I have. But ironically, when I play 14.1, I do play better with the 12.7mm KW shaft than the 12.6mm.

So I mentioned the possibility of selling it more as a gesture to someone else that might want a dandy cue shaft. I can play with it because I have since last October when I acquired the shaft from Martin @ Superior Cues. He only had 4 shafts and all were 12.85mm & 3.80 to 3.86 ozs. Apparently, there isn’t a large number of Cory’s KW shafts for sale.

But anyone interested in this shaft could also contact the cue makers I’ve mentioned and just get a new KW shaft built.
I was hoping for more discussion about the nuances of even finding a cue maker or better yet, why so many told me it
cannot get done. You’re familiar with my weight proportionality approach to cue making..

To this day, no one has contested the facts I cited and why is that? Because this is what all the greatest names in cue making respected when building a cue. They didn’t mismatch the weight of the shaft to the butt. They knew how much a shaft should weigh unless the cue was ordered differently.

So I’m curious to have a discussion but the cue makers forum is completely silent about it. For that matter, so has the main forum. Maybe people don’t care but I’m more certain of this than my intuition a heavier version flat faced KW. shaft can be built. This thread was never meant to drum up interest in buying my Barnhart RMS shaft. It was just an afterthought addition to the thread which I’d never have done if I already hadn’t received two great KW shafts from Jim.

I do believe it is or damn close because it fits seamlessly on my Scrugg Cue radial pin pool cue.
It’s the cue with the green & purple veneers and on the bottom & right side in the photos. The other
KW shafts are the ones I just had built by z Jim Pierce. IMO, .840 to .843 is a safe match for most cues.
