Laminated Wood

I have an opportunity to buy a bunch of laminated wood that Dufferin was using for their laminated shafts. This stuff is .950x1.125 and has 15 laminates. If you add one more to make it from .950 to 1.0 you are looking at 16 laminates per inch. I am curious about what you think it is worth. I can buy it for $2.50 per 32" piece. I know it would work fine for coring.

That's pretty cheap if they are good quality.
If they are Moochi quality, they are $2.50 overpriced.

How would you determine the quality??

Color, glue lines, tap tone, hardness and stability.
Definitely worth a try if low quantity buys are allowed.
Makers will have to turn them a few times to see how good they are.

I picked up 10 samples and will be turning them in the next few day. I will let you know what I think of them.

FWIW, Roy, I ordered a couple of laminated shafts from Dufferin around 5 years ago. The quality was excellent and they made a solid if stiff shaft. They stayed straight as long as I had them - don't recall who I gave them to but I bet they are still being used.

Hi David. When I was selling Dufferin, I probably sold about 10 cues with laminated shafts. Everyone seemed happy with them but most of the Dufferin clients were not as knowledgable as a lot of the purchasers today.

They were an experiment for me. I wondered how a flat laminated shaft would compare to a radially laminated shaft such as Predator. Obviously they squirted much more than the Predator and they were heavier and considerably stiffer (presumably because of the glue). But it was actually hard to tell they were laminated unless you looked closely. I quite liked them and could have played with them...

I'd take some at that price... if you have some available or can tell me who to call.

They are in the middle of a warehouse surrounded by other wood. I can get some in two weeks when he moves product for a local wood show. I will sell them for $2.50 US plus shipping. That lets me make $.30 for handling. I would suggest that you try a few first and if they work out ok get more. This chap is not into shipping products but I can.

I have been asked to put a couple pictures of the laminated maple on AZ. The square on the left was run part way through my jointer.
