Laminted shaft problems...

Hey people, I have a question for you. Has anyone on the forums heard of any of the top name laminated shafts "splitting" under strong play? Not necessarily masseing, but hard strokes and whatnot. The person that told me said to be careful with these laminated shafts, but she couldn't remember which one she heard the problems about. Any information on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.:D

My Universal Smart Shaft split, at the bottom near the joint. I didn't even notice when it happened, but at some point when I pulled it out of my case, there was the split, about 4" long and 1/16" wide. I haven't sent it back yet, but when I do it will be the second time. The first was because the [strike]ferrule mushroomed[/strike] (correction: it was because the insert broke and got stuck). The USS people (Cue & Case Connection) seem good about replacing faulty shafts, but it shouldn't be necessary.

Egg McD had similar problems with several Smart Shafts.

The bottom part of a Smart shaft is not laminated, is it? Which part split, the laminated part or the one piece part or the junction?

Thank you.

Since I am not a strong, but a weak player, I need not worry about my 314 shaft anytime soon.

Laminated Qs

This one doesn't look like it was "thinned down." Predator 314. I have never had that happen to me, but it is scary. My newest shaft that I really love, and prefer to the 314 is a Tiger X with the Sniper tip. Shoots great, solid hit, and wow, that Sniper tip is the best I've ever used. Even tho Corey Harper (big shot at Tiger) did not respond to my nice email telling him how happy I was with the custom made X shaft and Sniper tip. I shot with one at Valley Forge and it was superior to everything I have tried. So far - great. This is for u Corey :p

It split above the universal joint, but below where the laminated part starts. Right around where the piezo-electric fabric is -- perhaps it absorbed too many vibrations? So I think the answer to your question is that it split at the one piece part.

I'll post a picture as soon as I get a chance, probably late tonight since I have league.

Also, I should have said before that I never broke with it (except one pocket), and that I don't shoot a lot of power shots.

Thanks Corey...not sure if this is the shaft she's talking about, but the information is well received.

It Could Be That

Some people use their shaft to collect balls to rack. This not only dings the hell out of the shaft but could also cause the shaft to split. Only use the tip on the balls!!!!! JMHO

You will have no problems with the laminations splitting on a 314 or Tiger, provided you play with the shafts as intended. Idiots who should play off the wall, or better yet...not play...can find a way to destroy any equipment...no matter how high the quality.

i have seen several 314 shafts split just below the ferrule. This is the weakest point of the shaft because it is hollow there.

Chris you may be interested to read the thread "OB-1 Question(s)".
You are correct...that is the weak area.

Split USS -- Picture

Here's the picture I promised.

Two notes: First, as long as they're intact, I really like the Smart Shafts. They're very stiff, but have a lot of feel, IMHO. Second, I talked to the Cue & Case guys (the USS distributors), and they said that they've worked out all the problems they had with the first generation of Smart Shafts. They were apologetic and are replacing this one.

Good...

I'm glad that you're able to get a replacement for your shaft man. I know that you were more than upset from that happening.
