Lasik. How old is too old?

If you have cataracts, it may be covered under health insurance where as Lasik is not (elective/cosmetic surgery). Cataract surgery will replace with a new lens, which is brings the same result as Lasik.

Most doctors will recommend monovision if you're over 40. Monovision under-correct one eye so you don't need reading glasses as your eyes age. Monovision may work for pool, because as your eyes age the range of focus isn't as great as when you were young.

Best is to consult a doctor who done tons of this type of surgery. With the state of LASIK equipment, any doctor nowadays can perform the surgery by taking a weekend long crash course and buying a $500k-$700k machine.

For this thread to be useful for others who are considering surgery, those who gotten good results should list their uncorrected vision prior to surgery. Lasik is just one corrective technique, another is PRK. Couple of years ago I consulted a doctor, my uncorrected vision is -11.0 and -12.0, which didn't make me an ideal candidate for Lasik, but possible with PRK. I have cataracts in my left eye, but not serious enough for my health insurance to cover it. He recommended cataract surgery for my left eye instead of Lasik, and PRK for my right eye.

If you have a cataract history, then wait. If not, then go for it, astigmatism or not.

You are right in that Lasik won't promote the development of cataracts.

Again, if this guy has a bad astigmatism AND a history of cataracts, then wait.
