Here's the test I received from a scam email form "notice@smtp.02.ebay.com" fishing for you to log on and "verify your account". It threatens that your account will be terminated if this is not done within 48 hrs. (although the way eBay has been lately that might not be such a bad idea....termination).

Anyhow, just a heads-up for everyone. These sheisters are slick. Don't be a victim of this fraud.

There is also a nearly identical paypal scam going around. Sad to say it got me. Had to change everything.

These types of information seeking scams have been around for a while.

But I have been caught with something a bit more advanced - a Covert KeyLogging application that was running without my knowledge. The keylogger will record keystrokes, possible screen shots, and later send them to an FTP site that will be retrieved by those interested in collecting personal information.

Here is the link about IMP-Keylogger

Found the application during a Spyware Scan of my computer but not through a virus scan. The Ad-Aware tool missed it but the Nortons Spyware Tool (free from Yahoo Toolbar) caught it.

Thought I would share this.

I received an email reflecting pretty much the same content as this only from an AOL fraud saying that if I didn't update my AOL account " Click Here" within 24 hours my account would be closed. I contacted AOL and this was a fraud.

A key-logger is a MEDIUM risk?!?!?!?

What the hell constitutes a high risk?

I believe the risk level is associated with both how easily it spreads and how malicious it is. For instance, this may not spread automatically, or easily, thus only a medium security risk. A lot of this stuff has to be "downloaded" or "installed" by the user and can be prevented by conscientious computing.

That being said, I certainly wouldn't want a key-logging program on my computer...lol.

Yeah, no kidding!

Earlier this year I got a nasty one that redirected my ebay and paypal to bogus sites that tried to get sensitive information. That bad boy went into Windows XP system files to do the redirect and was a booger to clean up. Some knowledgeable people have told me I may still not be rid of it and need to scrub everything and reload Windows. Oy!

That is true, the only way to be 100% sure that a virus/adware/spyware infection is gone is to do a format and reinstall of the OS. I used to be a strong advocate of Windows but I'm more and more becoming a fan of MacOS and Linux! :D

The only problem is that if everyone switches then the virus/spyware writers would find a way. C'est la vie?!

Backdoor??

I just ran the Norton spyware scan and it found a Backdoor something or other. It was medium risk. What does something like that do? Now that I removed it should my system be okay?

Just like Zeeder mentioned, a medium risk is the term they appear to use to where the file will not infect other files or applications where a high risk will infect anything and everything.

Backdoor Info!
Backdoor.Netbus.170 belongs to Backdoor spyware category.
It's presense means that your computer is infected with malicious software and is insecure.

One place that Backdoor has been know to be found is at music download sites (just mentioning what I have read and I cannot confirm).

Now that you have deleted it, you are running a bit safer but future scans will be necessary along with definition updates for viruses and spyware. If you can save a screen shot of the active window and post it, I will be glad to help you look it up the next instance of spyware.

Hope this helps,
Myron
